1_README_ARCVIEW.TXT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAZPAC: An Interactive Map of Pacific Rim Natural Hazards, Population, and Infrastructure (ArcView versions) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Publication Reference: Bemis, Brynn L., Goss, Heather V., Yurkovich, Eric S., Perron, J. Taylor, and Howell, David G., 2002, HAZPAC: An interactive map of Pacific Rim natural hazards, population, and infrastructure: U.S. Geological Survey Digital Data Series DDS-76 (CD-ROM). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION TO THE ARCVIEW VERSIONS OF HAZPAC: This folder contains two different ArcView versions of HAZPAC, for those of you who have ArcView 3.x software. One version ("HAZPAC_ARCVIEW.APR") is suitable for use with the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension, which will enable you to query the data in the grids or use their data for analysis. The other version ("HAZPAC_NOSPATIALANALYST.APR") is for those of you who do not have the Spatial Analyst extension. In the non-Spatial Analyst version, the grids have been replaced by images. The ArcView versions of HAZPAC run on Windows 98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 operating systems. Note that ArcView 3.x also is supported on Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional), with limitations -- see information at ESRI's website (http://www.esri.com/software/arcview/knownissues.html). In addition, the ArcView Spatial Analyst version of HAZPAC requires ArcView 3.2 and the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension. If you do not have ArcView 3.x software, please use the ArcExplorer version of HAZPAC ("HAZPAC.AEP"), which you will find on this CD-ROM in the "HAZPAC_ARCEX" folder). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTENTS OF THE "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW" FOLDER ON THIS CD-ROM: 1_README_ARCVIEW.TXT - this README file HAZPAC_ARCVIEW.APR - the HAZPAC ArcView Spatial Analyst project HAZPAC_NOSPATIALANALYST.APR - the HAZPAC ArcView non-Spatial Analyst project USERGUIDEAV.PDF - the HAZPAC User Guide (ArcView version) DATA - directory of data and related files for HAZPAC ArcView projects: METADATA_AV.TXT - metadata for the HAZPAC ArcView project data GRID - subdirectory of ArcView grids (and related files): INFO - subdirectory of INFO files for all ArcView grids LANDCOVER - subdirectory of LAND USE AND VEGETATION grid files LIGHTS - subdirectory of LIGHTS AT NIGHT grid files POPULATION - subdirectory of POPULATION DENSITY grid files SEISMICITY - subdirectory of SEISMIC HAZARD grid files TOPOGRAPHY - subdirectory of TOPOGRAPHY & BATHYMETRY grid files LANDCOVER (.AVL, .TXT) LIGHTS (.AVL, .TXT) POPULATION (.AVL, .TXT) SEISMICITY (.AVL, .TXT) TOPOGRAPHY (.AVL, .TXT) IMAGE - subdirectory of images (and related files) of ArcView grids: COLORMAP.JPG - explanation of colors in HAZPAC's images LIGHTS_IMAGE (.JGW, .JPG, .TXT) POPULATION_IMAGE (.JGW, .JPG, .TXT) SEISMICITY_IMAGE (.JGW, .JPG, .TXT) SHADED_IMAGE (.JGW, .JPG, .TXT) TOPOGRAPHY_IMAGE (.JGW, .JPG, .TXT) SHAPE - subdirectory of ArcView shapefiles (and related files): AIR_ROUTES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) AIRPORTS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) CABLES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) CITIES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) COUNTRIES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) COUNTRY BOUNDARIES (.AVL, .TXT) EARTHQUAKES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) ENERGY_RESOURCES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) GEOLOGIC_AGE (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) GEOLOGIC_ROCK (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) RAILROADS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) RIVERS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) ROADS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) SEAFLOOR_SEDIMENT (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) TROPICAL_STORMS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) TSUNAMIS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) UTILITIES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) VOLCANIC_ERUPTIONS (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) VOLCANOES (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) WATER (.AVL, .DBF, .SHP, .SHX, .TXT) SOFTWARE - folder containing installable software needed to read the HAZPAC User Guide: ADOBE_ACROBAT - folder containing installable Adobe Acrobat Reader software: MACINTOSH - folder containing Adobe Acrobat Reader software for a Macintosh computer: 1_README_MACADOBE.TXT - README file for the Macintosh Acrobat Reader installer MAC_ACROBATINSTALLER - installs Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 on a Macintosh WINDOWSPC - folder containing Adobe Acrobat Reader software for a Windows PC: 1_README_PCADOBE.TXT - README file for the Windows PC Acrobat Reader installer PC_ACROBATINSTALLER.EXE - installs Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 on a Windows PC EXTENSIONS - folder containing extensions and drivers needed for the HAZPAC ArcView projects: 1_README_EXTENSIONS.TXT - README file for the HAZPAC ArcView extensions META.AVX - extension for the 'Explain Theme' Button in the ArcView Spatial Analyst project METAVIEW.AVX - extension for the 'Explain Theme' Button in the ArcView non-Spatial Analyst project PDGPCAL.AVX - extension for the 'Calculate Population' Function in the ArcView Spatial Analyst project PDGPCAL.DLL - driver for the 'Calculate Population' Function in the ArcView Spatial Analyst project ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GETTING STARTED WITH THE ARCVIEW VERSIONS OF HAZPAC: For best results, copy the "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW" folder from this CD-ROM onto your hard drive. To run either of the ArcView versions of HAZPAC, you will need to have ArcView 3.x software installed on your Windows PC. To run the HAZPAC Spatial Analyst version of HAZPAC, you will also need to have the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension installed on your Windows PC. For information on how to obtain ArcView 3.x software or its Spatial Analyst extension, please contact ESRI directly at http://www.esri.com/software/arcview/. We highly recommend that you follow the Tutorial in the HAZPAC User Guide (ArcView version), especially if you have never used ArcView software before or if your exposure to ArcView 3.x has been minimal. Even experienced ArcView users may find the User Guide to be helpful with introducing them to new functions that have been customized for the HAZPAC projects. This User Guide, which is called "USERGUIDEAV.PDF" and is located in the "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW" folder, contains exercises and a User Reference Guide that will help familiarize you with ArcView software and with the various functions in the HAZPAC ArcView projects. The User Guide is a PDF (Portable Document Format) file that must be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you may install Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 directly from this CD-ROM. To install Acrobat Reader on a Windows PC, first log on as "Administrator," then click on "PC_ACROBATINSTALLER.EXE" in the "SOFTWARE\ADOBE_ACROBAT\WINDOWSPC" folder (if you are upgrading from an earlier version of Acrobat Reader, please follow the specific instructions in the file "1_README_PCADOBE.TXT"). To install Acrobat Reader on a Macintosh computer, click on "MAC_ACROBATINSTALLER" in the "SOFTWARE\ADOBE_ACROBAT\MACINTOSH" folder (please follow the instructions in the file "1_README_MACADOBE.TXT"). If you experience installation problems, please contact Adobe directly at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/. IMPORTANT NOTE: The "EXTENSIONS" folder contains several custom HAZPAC ArcView extensions and drivers, which have been gathered from the Environmental Systems and Resource Institute, Inc. (ESRI) website. These extensions and drivers MUST NOT be moved from their location in the "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW\EXTENSIONS" folder; if they ARE moved, certain customized buttons and functions in the HAZPAC ArcView projects will not work properly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DATA IN THE ARCVIEW VERSIONS OF HAZPAC: All data in both ArcView versions of HAZPAC have been projected into the Mollweide projection, around a central meridian of 160.00 degrees West (-160.00 degrees) longitude. The Crowding the Rim GIS Development Team has made every effort to maintain the integrity of the original datasets whenever possible. Obvious errors in the data have been corrected, but, in most cases, the data is presented "as is." In some cases, however, data had to be manipulated in order to make them suitable for HAZPAC. As a consequence, manual editing may have resulted in minor errors during this process. For details concerning the sources of, as well as any modifications to, the datasets in ArcView HAZPAC, please consult the metadata file, "METADATA_AV.TXT" (located in the "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW\DATA" folder). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARCVIEW EXTENSION CREDITS: Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.
