U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DIGITAL DATA SERIES DDS-15 CD-ROM Atlas of the Deepwater Parts of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Caribbean Sea By D.C. Twichell and C.F. Polloni Display software by Russell A. Ambroziak Software documentation by Christine A. Cook A_README.1ST FILE This CD-ROM contains composite digital sidescan-sonar mosaics and geologic maps of the deepwater parts of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern Caribbean Sea. The mosaics provide the first broad-scale view of the sea floor and help us to understand sedimentary processes that have been unknown or poorly known until recently. These images have been published in paper atlases at a scale of 1:500,000 as U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series I-1864-A,B (1987) and I-2054 (1991). The geologic interpretations of the images are expanded from those in I-1864 and I-2054. The data on this disc consist of the fully processed GLORIA sidescan-sonar images, geologic interpretations of the images, bathymetry overlays for the images, 21 seismic profiles collected in 1978 along the Atlantic continental margin, and a three-dimensional perspective of the entire eastern Atlantic. The GLORIA data on this disc were collected during 10 cruises between 1982 and 1987 for regions where water was more than 400 m deep. This disc includes DOS programs COLLAGE and MAPPER, which are used to retrieve and display the data. A menu program assists in accessing the text files and the display programs. The graphics are best displayed in Super VGA (640x480 pixels with 256 colors). Users who do not have access to DOS will have to provide software to read and manipulate the data. The C source code for the DOS software and documentation are provided on this disc in the \SOURCE and \DOCFILES subdirectories. In the documentation for GLORIA there are photographs of the instrumentation and the ship used for data collection that can be viewed from the menu system. This CD-ROM was produced in accordance with the ISO 9660 standard and can be accessed by any computer system that has the appropriate software to read ISO 9660 discs; however, the disc is intended for use in a DOS environment. The minimum system requirements to use the data with the software provided on this disc are as follows: o IBM or compatible personal computer o 640 kb RAM (at least 540 kb free memory) o Math coprocessor o MS- or PC-DOS version 5.0 or later o Microsoft MSCDEX version 2.1 or later o CD-ROM drive with ISO 9660 software driver o Hard disk drive (5 Mb free) o Super VGA graphics card (640x480 pixels with 256 colors) o VGA color monitor To get started: DOS users should make the CD-ROM drive the active drive; then type INSTALL. For starts after installation, type C:\DDS15. Those not wishing to install software on their hard disk may start the CD-ROM software by making the CD-ROM drive the active drive and typing RUN. This mode provides a view of the CD-ROM but prevents the user from saving image files to disk. Those not using DOS systems should access the A_README.1ST file in the disc's root directory. DISC CONTENTS Several DOS subdirectories are contained on this CD-ROM. Their names and the information they contain are listed below: \DOCFILES - This subdirectory contains the ASCII document files for this CD-ROM. These files include the following: ACKNOWL.DOC - This file provides acknowledgments of contributors to this CD-ROM . AUTHORS.DOC - This file lists the authors of this CD-ROM. BATHY.DOC - This file indicates the source of the bathymetric data contained on the disc. COLLAGE.DOC - This file describes the DOS program COLLAGE that is used to display the GLORIA imagery and the linework that overlays the imagery. The program is by Russell A. Ambroziak, and the documentation is by Christine A. Cook, both of the U.S. Geological Survey. See also MAPPER.DOC. CONTACTS.DOC - This file provides a list of contacts for additional information on this CD-ROM, the U.S. Geological Survey's CD-ROM Support Center, and the data contained on this disc. CONTENTS.DOC - This file contains a description of the contents of the various subdirectories on this CD-ROM. DISCLAIM.DOC - This file contains the disclaimer for this CD-ROM. GEOLOGY.DOC - This file is an explanation of the geologic terms and the abbreviations used on the color maps. GETSTART.DOC - This file, by Scott Madin, a USGS Volunteer for Science intern, contains a step-by-step explanation of the use of the CD-ROM display software. Upon completion of this brief tutorial, the user should have a good working knowledge of how to select, display, and output data from this CD-ROM. GLORIA.DOC - This file contains information about the instruments used to collect the sidescan data. MAPPER.DOC - This file describes the DOS program MAPPER which is used to view earth-registered color polygons, points, and vector linework overlays. The program is by Russell A. Ambroziak, and the program documentation is by Christine A. Cook, both of the U.S. Geological Survey. See also COLLAGE.DOC. OVERVIEW.DOC - This file is the primary text describing the data contained on this CD-ROM and the geology and geography of the study area. REFERENC.DOC - This file lists the references cited in the documentation contained on this CD-ROM. REGISTER.DOC - This file contains a registration form by which a user can elect to receive announcements of new CD-ROM releases. This form also provides a vehicle for suggestions and feedback to the U.S. Geological Survey about the current disc. SEISMIC.DOC - This file contains the text describing the seismic data contained on this CD-ROM. \DOSMENU - This subdirectory contains all the software required to support the menu system used when running under a DOS system. This menu system is invoked by issuing the command DDS15 from the user's root directory. (The user must initially perform an install from the active CD-ROM drive.) \EEZ - This subdirectory contains the geologic map information, which includes bathymetry; coastlines; canyons; county, state, and international boundaries; geology; seismic lines, and ship's tracks. \RUNMENU - This subdirectory contains a copy of the DOSMENU menu system but is configured to operate in a viewing mode. This configuration allows the user to use the software on the CD-ROM without performing the install but nothing can be saved to the user's hard disk. \SEISMIC - This directory has an abbreviated copy of the data released on USGS Open-File Report 92-289. It provides a preview of 21 multichannel seismic profiles collected in 1978 along the Atlantic continental margin. \SHOW - This directory contains three-dimensional (3-D) imagery of the entire East Coast of the continental United States. The software provides a moving 3-D black and white image as well as an identical pseudo-color image to provide a perspective of the general relief of the region. \SOFTWARE - This subdirectory contains executable versions of the display software and other related processing routines. \SOURCE - This subdirectory contains the C language source and object code for the various software routines used on this CD-ROM.
