Contents of the ASCII water-quality measurements files Version 1.0 09/12/96 Each file contains the water-quality measurements (units of measure are given in the WQ_PARM.DAT file) for a single station. The filename is ssssssss.ttt where ssssssss is the 8-digit station number, and ttt is a unique 3-character code identifying the constituent group name listed in the WQ_PARM.DAT file, and given as follows: ALK for alkalinity, bicarbonate, and carbonate parameters, BIO for biological parameters, DMV for daily mean values of streamflow, MAJ for major dissolved ions, MT1 for dissolved and total trace-element parameters, MT2 for dissolved and total trace-element parameters, MT3 for dissolved and total trace-element parameters, MT4 for dissolved and total trace-element parameters, NUT for nutrients, suspended sediment, and organic carbon, PHY for physical/field parameters including instantaneous flow, RAD for radiochemical parameters. The first 48 characters of each data file contain the following information with each record sorted by date, begin time, and end time. A missing value indicator of a negative sign and sufficient values of 9 to fill the specified field width is used--e.g., -999 would be used for sample collection ending year below. The remaining portion of the record gives the constituent measurement value and its remark and method codes. The method codes are available beginning in 1985. Method codes for laboratory analyzed constituents are defined in the METHODS.DAT file. The method codes for constituents analyzed in the field are not officially maintained by the USGS, and thus no code definitions are available. The format of the constituent values, remarks, and method codes are listed below by file name for each constituent group. The short name given in the WQ_PARM.DAT file is used in referencing each parameter. Note that the format F8.3 represents the maximum number of decimal places that may appear in the field. For some parameters (e.g., fecal bacteria) fewer decimal places may be reported. The value -999.999 indicates a missing measurement value. A blank is used to indicate missing value for the method code field. A blank in a remark field indicates that no special conditions are associated with the value. If all water-quality measurements are missing for a single sample, the record was excluded from the file. Negative streamflow values indicate reverse flow resulting from wind, backwater, or tidal effects.
