Navigation files were extracted as a comma-delimited American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) text file from Fugawi Marine ENC Ver 4. GPS Navigation Software. A Garmin GPS 18 PC sensor was used during the flight. The Fugawi software recorded the following: latitude, longitude, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) easting, UTM northing, UTM zone, altitude, local date, UTC date, local time, UTC time, speed, leg bearing, true/magnetic indicator, leg distance, total distance, and sequence number once per second.

Images were acquired using a Nikon D1X camera. The camera's internal clock was synchronized to UTC. Latitude and longitude were recorded in the Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) header of each image along with the time the images was taken. Image files are named according to the time they were captured. The image filenames have the format yyyy_mmdd_hhmmssd.jpg. (For example, image 2011_0830_133636d.jpg was taken August 30, 2011, at 13:36:36 UTC, and "d" designates that a digital camera was used.) Images are associated with GPS positions according to the time of capture, with verification provided by the information stored in the EXIF header.

Processed Navigation

The processed navigation file can be accessed from within the nav folder or by clicking the following link: ds979_11cch04.csv (CSV file). The file contains 12 fields that are defined as follows:

Field 1: LONGITUDE - estimated longitude (decimal degree, position of aircraft)
Field 2: LATITUDE - estimated latitude (decimal degree, position of aircraft)
Field 3: HR_MIN_SEC - hour_minute_second (UTC)
Field 4: IMAGE - image filename (year_monthday_hhmmssd.jpg)
Field 5: IMAGE_URL - location of the image internal to data series
Field 6: CONTACTSHEET_URL - location of the contactsheet within the data series report
Field 7: YEAR - year the photo was taken
Field 8: MONTH - month the photo was taken
Field 9: DAY - day the photo was taken
Field 10: PRE_POST - type of survey conducted (pre- or post-storm)
Field 11: STORM - (baseline or name of the storm)
Field 12: GEO_AREA - locations surveyed

Raw Navigation

Navigation files were extracted as a comma-delimited American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) text file from Fugawi Marine ENC Ver. 4 GPS Navigation Software. A Garmin GPS 18 PC sensor was used during the flight. The Fugawi software recorded the following: latitude, longitude, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Easting, UTM Northing, UTM Zone, altitude, local date, UTC date, local time, UTC time, speed, leg bearing, true/magnetic indicator, leg distance, total distance, and sequence number once per second.

The raw navigation files can be accessed from within the nav folder or by clicking the following link: ds979_11cch04_0830_garmin18p.txt (text file). The file contains 16 fields (separated by spaces) that are defined as follows:

Field 4: UTM northing
Field 5: UTM zone
Field 6: ALTITUDE (meters)
Field 7: LOCAL DATE (yyyymmdd)
Field 8: UTC DATE (yyyymmdd)
Field 9: LOCAL TIME (hhmmss)
Field 10: UTC TIME (hhmmss)
Field 11: SPEED (kilometers per hour)
Field 12: LEG BEARING
Field 13: TRUE/MAGNETIC INDICATOR
Field 14: LEG DISTANCE (meters)
Field 15: TOTAL DISTANCE (meters)
Field 16: SEQUENCE NUMBER - sequential number
