Readme for U.S. Geological Survey 
Digital Database of the Geologic Map of the Island of 
Hawaii
Data Series 144

This digital database was compiled with ArcInfo version 
7.2.1 and consists of files containing geologic map in 
ArcInfo coverage format. ArcInfo-compatible GIS software 
is therefore required to use the files of this database. 
The database is stored in a single zipped folder (bimp.zip)
in this release for ease of transfer. The scale of the 
source map limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the 
database to 1:100,000 or smaller. Available ArcInfo 
coverages described below:

ArcInfo coverage         Description

  bimpgeo                Faults, contacts, and rock units 
                           (line, polygon).

  bimpvent               Volcanic vents (points).

  bimpcrks               Ground cracks, and fissure vents.
                           (line)

  bimp_tephra            Ash distribution (line, polygon).

  bimpc14                Radiocarbon sample locations and 
                           radiometric age (points).

  bimpchem               Geochemical sample locations 
                           (point).

  bimp_flts              Faults (line)

Database file containing major element oxide abundances for 
geochemical samples (bimpchem) is provided in bimpchem.dbf
