Symbols and abbreviations
Three types of observations are used to determine the location of the fault and indicate recency of movement. Each of these is labeled on the map in a different color. Abbreviations are also available as a single list for printing (abbreviations, 32kb PDF ). Data sources are labeled on the map as abbreviated references; full references are in the pamphlet.

Base maps The index maps and 1:100,000-scale poster use satellite imagery with shaded relief
(Sleeter et al., 2004) for
its base map. The 1:12,000-scale page-size plots use 0.3-m (1-ft) orthoimagery
for the San Francisco-Oakland area for 2004 (USGS National Map).
