This geodatabase is a digital reproduction of three legacy USGS oil shale publications--MF-958 (Pitman and Johnson, 1978), MF-1069 (Pitman, 1979), and OC-132 (Pitman and others, 1990). The database consists of 106 feature classes in three feature datasets organized by publication. Each dataset contains isopach contours, isoresource contours, isoresource polygons, and corehole and drillhole locations with resource values for 12 kerogen-rich (R) and kerogen-lean (L) oil shale zones in the Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado. The uppermost zones, Mahogany and R-6, also contain detailed structure files. The zones in descending order are: Mahogany, R-6, L-5, R-5, L-4, R-4, L-3, R-3, L-2, R-2, L-1, and R-1.
			<purpose>Increasing energy demand, changing economics, new technology, and geopolitical issues have spurred renewed interest in other energy alternatives such as oil shale, heavy oil, and tar sands. The USGS Energy Resources Program has previously conducted extensive field and geologic research on these commodities and is initiating an effort to inventory and make these important legacy information assets accessible to the public, land managers, and other decision-makers. In addition, the Energy Program is scoping the geologic, technical, economic, and environmental factors controlling the production and use of these energy sources and will provide recommendations for future research in order to meet the energy needs of the United States.</purpose>

			<procstep>
				<procdesc>All original hardcopy maps were scanned and cropped to extract the structure, isopach, and isoresource maps for each oil shale zone. Images were then registered and rectified in ArcGIS 9.1. The Mahogany and R-6 oil shale zones were published at a scale of 1:126,720, whereas the L-5 through R-1 zones were published at a scale of 1:250,000. All feature classes were digitized on screen at a scale of approximately 1:20,000. The Mahogany outcrop line was digitized from MF-958 on screen and used as registration for all subsequent feature classes. The resultant feature class, m_outcrop, was used for the MF-958 and MF-1069 feature datasets. This outcrop line was revised in two small areas in the original 1990 publication OC-132 and was therefore edited and saved as m_outcrop_oc132 for use in the OC-132 feature dataset.

As digital reproduction was the primary goal, the point and polyline feature classes in all three feature datasets are simply digital replicas of the original hardcopy maps. All feature classes were digitized on screen in ArcGIS 9.1 utilizing several topology rules and attributed accordingly using the domain "Type" when necessary. Polygon feature classes for gallons per ton (gpt) and barrels per acre (bpa) were not present on the original hardcopy maps. These polygon feature classes were created in ArcCatalog by merging the appropriate outcrop line (m_outrcop or m_outrcrop_oc132) with each polyline feature class. Resource polygons were then attributed (BPA_RNG or GPT_RNG) to reflect the values between each contour line in the isoresource polyline feature classes. (Please note: All values for barrels per acre (bpa) are reported in thousands to maintain consistency with the original hardcopy publications).</procdesc>

		<overview>
			<eaover>Entities contained in this Overview Description section pertain to geodatabase feature classes and their associated attributes. Entity_Type_Label contains the feature class name and Attribute_Definition defines the items contained within each feature class as well as a brief description of each attribute. Please note that not all entities or their attributes are found in each dataset. For example, *_data_pts can only be found in the MF958 and MF1069 datasets and not in the OC132 dataset.

Feature classes are listed as " *_bpa_data_pts " where " * " can be replaced with the layer name, such as "m" for the Mahogany or "l5" for the L5 oil shale zone.

There is one domain contained in this geodatabase named "Type." The domain was used to facilitate attributing in ArcGIS of the following items:

C = Certain (all polyline feature classes)
I = Inferred (approximate or eroded) (all polyline feature classes)
CH = Corehole for oil-shale evaluation (all point feature classes)
DH = Drillhole for oil and gas (all point feature classes)

Please note: All values for all feature classes pertaining to "bpa" or barrels per acre are reported in thousands to maintain consistency with the original publications.

Aliases:

Barrels per Acre (thousands) -- in "bpa" feature classes
Gallons per Ton oil-yield -- in "gpt" feature classes
LEACH_% -- in L5 and R5 "isopach" and "gpt" point feature classes (percentage of zone leached)
Thickness of zone, in feet -- in "iso" and "isopach" feature classes
Elevation in feet, top of zone -- in "struc" feature classes (Mahogany and R-6)
