Abstract:
"The NGDC Deck41 database contains surficial sediment descriptions for over 36,000 seafloor samples worldwide. The file was begun by the Marine Geology and Geophysics group of the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) in the early 1970s, and transferred to NGDC in 1975 when the group moved to Boulder, Colorado. The data were abstracted and coded by the old NODC Marine Geology and Geophysics group, primarily from core logs, laboratory analysis sheets, and unpublished reports contributed by individuals and oceanographic institutions and agencies worldwide. Data include collecting source, ship, cruise, sample id, latititude/longitude, date of collection, water depth, sampling device, dominant lithology, secondary lithology, and a brief description of the surficial sediment at the location."

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data within the Deck41 database were extracted from other reports. Seafloor information is primarily simplistic verbal descriptions, but also may contain more extensive descriptions or analytical values. As of this publication, only the simplistic verbal description are made available to the data mining software dbSEABED. Work to include these usually more extensive data into usSEABED is ongoing as of the publication date. Many source datasets (defined by the NODCref number) are held under individual MGGID (NGDC Marine Geology and Geophysics ID) numbers. Those Deck 41 datasets included under either the original source or as given under the NGDC MGGID number are not included in the outputs of usSEABED. See the lineage section for specific information.
Completeness_Report:
(1) Only those data in US waters were processed for inclusion into usSEABED. (2) Those samples with locations without minute-tenths in latitude or longitude are excluded. (3) Certain NODCref IDs are excluded because the original data under the original source are already included in usSEABED. (4) Only the dominant and secondary lithologies and Munsell color codes are used as a basis for data mining.
