As part of a larger investigation into the possible effects of African dust on coral reefs and human health, air samples were collected during African dust conditions in an African dust source region (Bamako and Kati, Republic of Mali), off the coast of West Africa (Sal Island, Republic of Cape Verde), and at downwind sites in the southeastern (Trinidad and Tobago) and northeastern Caribbean (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands). Air samples were collected sporadically between December 2001 and August 2008 using high volume samplers. Samples were analyzed for 84 targeted semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) including current use and historical pesticides and breakdown products, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and breakdown products, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners. The dataset consists of blank-corrected concentrations of SOCs detected in 68 air and 2 dry deposition samples. Also included are the SOC detections in 28 associated field-laboratory blanks and the method detection limits. Purpose: The dataset was developed to elucidate the semivolatile organic compounds associated with African dust air masses and during non-dust conditions. Experiments to test the effects of those detected chemicals on marine organisms could then be designed and conducted. In addition, duplicate blank analytical results were compared. Logical_Consistency_Report: Protocols were developed and used to standardize sample collection methods at all sites. Polyurethane foam plugs were solvent extracted and teflon cartridges and filter holders were solvent rinsed (and allowed to dry) prior to sampling. Analytical laboratories used surrogates to determine recovery of different analytes using a specific method and internal standards and calibration curves in accordance with standard procedure in organic analysis. Samples were analyzed using extraction and analysis protocols as in Patton and others (1989), Zaugg and others (1995), Foreman and others (2000), Majewski and others (2000), Zaugg and others (2002), Usenko and others (2005), Primbs and others (2008), and Genualdi (2009). Calibration curves were run and analytical data (nanograms SOC per sample) were surrogate recovery corrected. Process_Date: 20011211 -20100812 for field sampling.
