Description:
Abstract:
This report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), of the Powder River Basin (PRB) of Montana and Wyoming is part of the U.S. Coal Resources and Reserves Assessment Project. Essential to that project was the creation of a comprehensive drill hole database that was used for coal bed correlation and for coal resource and reserve assessments in the PRB. This drill hole database was assembled using data from the USGS National Coal Resources Data System, several other Federal and State agencies, and selected mining companies. Additionally, USGS personnel manually entered lithologic picks into the database from geophysical logs of oil, gas, and coalbed methane wells. Of the 29,928 drill holes processed, records of 21,393 are in the public domain and are included in this report. The database contains location information, lithology, and coal bed names for each drill hole.
Purpose:
For the USGS assessment of coal resources and reserves within the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming, the basin was subdivided into four assessment areas. These assessment areas were defined to keep the databases and modeled areas to a more manageable size and to permit timely publication of assessment results.

For this USGS Data Series product, the coal assessment areas accuracy is sufficient for the purposes for which they were defined. The Powder River basin coal assessment areas define the four study areas within the basin. No Warranty is made by the USGS for the use of these data. Any use of this information to any specific application should be based on independent examination and verification. Those making use of, or relying on, this information assume all risks and liability arising from such use or reliance.
Completeness_Report: The four Powder River basin assessment areas are complete.

Process_Description:
The Powder River Basin assessment area was subdivided into four areas to keep the databases and modeled areas to a more manageable size and permit more timely publications. The Gillette coal field area is based on the Wyodak-Anderson coal outcrop and Wyodak-Anderson clinker. The north and south boundaries of the area were delineated by the closest township and range lines that encompassed the area of active mining around the town of Gillette. The west boundary was defined by the eastern edge of Township 75 West. The Northern Wyoming Powder River Basin area extends from the northern boundary of the Gillette coal field north to the Montana border and east-west across the basin. The Southwestern Powder River Basin area extends from the southern boundary of the Northern Wyoming Powder River Basin area to the southern margin of the Powder River Basin, and eastward to the western boundary of the Gillette coal field. The Montana Powder River Basin area includes all the Powder River Basin in Montana, exclusive of Indian Tribal Lands.
