This computer-generated image shows onshore- and offshore topography in the Monterey Bay area. Note the contrast between the relatively flat continental shelf near the coast and the steep, incised continental slope and large, deep Monterey submarine canyon. This canyon is one of the larger in the world. Data used to generate the seafloor topography were obtained from NOAA; the land topographic data were obtained from the USGS (image by N. Maher and R. Hall).
