It was produced directly from the file used to create the print version in 1989. The Yosemite National Park region is comprised of portions of 15 7.5 minute quadrangles. The original publication of the map in 1989 included the map, described map units and provided correlations, as well as a geologic summary and references, all on the same sheet. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:125,000 or smaller. Purpose: The digitizing of this database is to provide access of a previously published map to the public via the web. This database and accompanying plot files depict the distribution of geologic materials and structures at a regional (1:125,000) scale. The accompanying PDF is a scan of the previously published paper map, and is not intended as a cartographic product. Supplemental_Information: The databases in this report were compiled in ARC/INFO, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), version 8.3. The files are in COVERAGE (ARC/INFO vector data) format. Coverages are stored in uncompressed ARC export format (ARC/INFO version 8.x). ARC/INFO export files (files with the .e00 extension) can be converted into ARC/INFO coverages in ARC/INFO (see below) and can be read by some other Geographic Information Systems, such as MapInfo via ArcLink and ESRI's ArcView (version 1.0 for Windows 3.1 to 3.11 is available for free from ESRI's web site: ). The digital compilation was originally done in Scitex RES280 cartographic system for print production. The Scitex raster digit files were tranferred into an Arc GIS system. The raster files were imported into coverages (polygon and line), using the Scitexpoly and Scitexline commands in command-line Arc. Scitex numeric font/color codes were converted from channel information to basic geologic units and geologic line types. Coordinate information was provided to the corners of the map, projection was maintained from print version. Revisions: This is the digital version of previously published material. digital review...: 1/8/04 Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Single_Date/Time: Calendar_Date: 2004 Currentness_Reference: publication date Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: As needed Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -119.9167 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -119.1667 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 38.2167 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 38.4667 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Theme_Keyword: geology Theme_Keyword: bedrock geology Theme_Keyword: surficial geology Theme_Keyword: geologic history Theme_Keyword: geologic structures Theme_Keyword: Sierra Nevada Mountain Range Theme_Keyword: Yosemite National Park Theme_Keyword: Yosemite Theme_Keyword: California Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Place_Keyword: United States of America Place_Keyword: Yosemite National Park Place_Keyword: California Place_Keyword: Pinecrest Place_Keyword: Tower Peak Place_Keyword: Matterhorn Peak Place_Keyword: Bodie Place_Keyword: Lake Eleanor Place_Keyword: Hetch-Hetchy Reservoir Place_Keyword: Tuolumne Meadows Place_Keyword: Mono Craters Place_Keyword: El Portal Place_Keyword: Merced Park Place_Keyword: Devil's Postpile Place_Keyword: Bass Lake Place_Keyword: Shuteye Peak Place_Keyword: Kaiser Peak Place_Keyword: Yosemite Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: Augmented FIPS 10-4 and FIPS 6-4, version 1.0 Place_Keyword: 41047 = Marion Access_Constraints: none Use_Constraints: Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:125,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:125,000 will not yield greater detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Any hardcopies utilizing these data shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent this data set, nor to imply the U.S. Geological Survey approved changes the user has made. Attribute_Definition_Source: author Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: Lines (arcs) are recorded as strings of vectors and are described in an arc attribute table ("filename".AAT). They define the boundaries of the map units and other delineated areas as well as linear features such as but not limited to, faults, crater rims, and moraine crests. These distinctions, including geologic characterizations of linear features, are recorded in the LTYPE field in the AAT. Map units (polygons) are described in a polygon attribute table ("filename".PAT). The identities of the map units from compilations sources are recorded in the PTYPE field of the PAT by unit symbol. Almost all of the attributes in the various attribute tables included in the report are set or calculated by ArcInfo and include "filename"#, "filename"-ID, LENGTH, FNODE, TNODE, RPOLY, LPOLY, AREA, and PERIMETER. The rest are defined by the author as described above and include LTYPE, PTYPE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spatial_Reference_Information: Horizontal_Coordinate_System_Definition: Planar: Map_Projection: Map_Projection_Name: Transverse Mercator Transverse_Mercator: Scale_Factor_at_Central_Meridian: 0.9996 Longitude_of_Central_Meridian: -119.5417 Latitude_of_Projection_Origin: 0.0 False_Easting: 500000 False_Northing: 0.0 Planar_Coordinate_Information: Planar_Coordinate_Encoding_Method: coordinate pair Coordinate_Representation: Abscissa_Resolution: 0.000032 Ordinate_Resolution: 0.000032 Planar_Distance_Units: meters Geodetic_Model: Horizontal_Datum_Name: D_Clarke_1866 Ellipsoid_Name: Clarke 1866 Semi-major_Axis: 6378206.400000 Denominator_of_Flattening_Ratio: 294.978698 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Distribution_Information: Distributor: Contact_Information: Contact_Person_Primary: Contact_Person: Database Coordinator Contact_Organization: U.S. Geological Survey Contact_Address: Address_Type: mailing address Address: 345 Middlefield Rd., M/S 975 City: Menlo Park State_or_Province: CA Postal_Code: 94025 Country: USA Resource_Description: USGS Miscellaneous Investigation Series 1874 Distribution_Liability: Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
