This report describes the contents of a digital data set which consists of ArcInfo exchange-format files, Postscript and Adobe portable document format digital geologic map plot files, and georeferenced TIFF and MrSid images (of the original paper map sheets).  A page-sized, color version of the digital geologic map is included in the report.  The geospatial database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:12,000.  The data set is available on the World Wide Web at http://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i797/.

Requirements:  A networked computer system is required to copy the data set from the host computer across the Internet.  A geographic information system (GIS) capable of importing ArcInfo exchange-format files is required for access to the digital files.  The map sheet files are stored in PostScript format (i797s1.ps, i797s2.ps, i797s3.ps, i797s4.ps, i797s5.ps) and Adobe portable document format (i797s1.pdf, i797s2.pdf, i797s3.pdf, i797s4.pdf, i797s5.pdf).

Explanation of digital data files: 

The primary GIS for the Stillwater Complex is available as one UNIX compressed TAR file, stil12k-data.tar.Z, which includes the report (i797.pdf), geospatial database in an ESRI ArcInfo interchange-format (*.e00), and FGDC-compliant metadata (i797.met)files. Geologic map sheets and georeferenced images are packaged by file type in separate files (listed below) due to large file sizes.

To download the primary GIS data files, create a new workspace in a UNIX working environment and copy the stil12k-data.tar.Z file to your new workspace. Use the command 'uncompress -v stil12k-data.tar.Z' to uncompress the file. Then use the command 'tar -xvf stil12k-data.tar' to extract the files from the TAR file. And finally, to import the ArcInfo exchange-format files (*e00) into your workspace, open ArcInfo on your workstation and enter '&run importfile' at the Arc prompt.

Your working directory should contain the following files:
00readme.txt - this file in UNIX ASCII format
0readme.txt - this file in DOS ASCII format
importfile.aml -  ArcInfo program to import ArcInfo interchange-format files into the user's workspace.
i797.pdf - Report text in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF) format. 

ArcInfo exchange-format files (*.e00) and metadata (*.met) for the Montana South State Plane map projection dataset include:
i797.e00 - principal line and polygon geologic map coverage
i797p.e00 - point GIS for structural symbols
i797.met - metadata text file

Re-projected ArcInfo exchange-format files (*.e00) in geographic coordinates:
