Abstract Estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer use were made for counties in the United States for the period 1945 to 1985. County fertilizer use estimates were obtained through the disaggregation of state-level fertilizer use in proportion to the amount of state fertilized acreage reported to exist in counties. 2. Applications that use this data 2.1 Intended use of data Large-scale ground and surface water analyses of nutrient sources or changes in these sources. 2.2 Limitations of data County-level data. When using the estimates to quantify annual changes, note that changes in the county-level estimates primarily reflect changes in state-level fertilizer use. Differences among counties in the percent change in fertilizer use reflect changes in county fertilized acreage. 3. Attribute discussion 4. Procedures used to create or automate data 4.1 Origin of polygons: The county polygons are provided for the convenience of users in displaying the data. The county polygons are from the 34M coverage, COUNTY34M (see documentation in the Distributed Spatial Data Library). County polygons were not used in making fertilizer use computations. Any similar county coverage may be substituted by the user. 4.2 Fertilizer use estimates: See documentation in Open-File Report 5. Revisions made to data (revision number, date, description) 6. Reviews applied to data (review type, date, person, description) The fertilizer use estimates have received standard colleague review as part of the Director's approval process. 7. Related spatial and tabular data sets and programs 7.1 N and P fertilizer use estimates.
