Revision 1 - 17Feb98

The landslide at Devil's Slide in San Mateo County has been added to both the sfbr-sef and sm-sef coverages and plotfiles from a digital representation of Brabb and Pampeyan, 1972. This landslide was not show by Nilsen and Wright (1979) on their red plate, which was used as a primary source for the present slides and earthflows maps.
Brabb, E. E., and Pampeyan, E.H., 1972, Preliminary map of landslide deposits in San Mateo County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map MF-344, map scale 1:62,500.

This report is a digital database package containing both plotfiles and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases of maps of slides and earth flows in the San Francisco Bay Region. The data are provided for both the entire region and each county within the region, in two formats. The data is provided as ARC/INFO (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, CA) coverages for use in GIS packages, and as PostScript plotfiles of formatted maps similar to traditional U.S. Geological Survey map products. There is also a pamphlet available describing the databases and plotfiles. To download databases, plotfiles, or pamphlet, please select the appropriate entry below. Note the disclaimers.

DATA

Digital databases are available for GIS users in ARC/INFO vector COVERAGE format. Those who download digital data should also download the descriptive pamphlet.

The data have been archived as uncompressed Arc/Info export files, then compressed with gzip. Details of gzip and GIS formats as well as links to public-domain software utilities are available on the formats page. File sizes (in parentheses) are for the gzip-compressed download file, followed by the size of the file when uncompressed.

PLOTFILES

Plotfiles are available for those who wish to produce paper copies of maps prepared from the digital data. These maps have been edited to conform as much as possible to standard U.S. Geological Survey format for geologic maps. The plotfiles are in PostScript format. Note that these plotfiles are formatted to plot on 34 by 34 inch or larger sheets, so a large format color plotter is required to produce a paper map. Alternatively, some software can import PostScript files, allowing the user to manipulate the map image as desired. Those who download plotfiles should also download the descriptive pamphlet.

PAMPHLET

A descriptive pamphlet is provided, available either as a PDF, a formated PostScript file, formatted for printing on standard 8.5 by 11 inch paper, and as an unformatted text only file. The pamphlet describes the content and character of the database, including details of database structure, and the map, including how the map was produced. This pamphlet contains information important for all those using this report.
