Description:
Abstract:
Map showing Geology, Oil and Gas fields, and Geologic Provinces of Africa is GIS data set designed originally in ESRI's ARC/INFO
ver. 7.0.4 system. This digitally compiled map includes geology, oil and gas field centerpoints, and geologic provinces of Africa
with some of these components extended into geographically adjacent areas. This digital compilation is an interim product
of the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Project (WEP) and part of a series on CD-ROM. The goal of the WEP is
to assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world. Results of this assessment were reported
in the year 2000 (see USGS DDS-60). The first version of this CD-ROM was published in 1997 (see Persits and others, 1997).
Reasons to issue version 2.0 are:
1. Original ESRIs ArcView shape files were in the Robinson projection. It was found that Robinson projection in ArcView is
an implementation that differs from one used in workstation ArcInfo and therefore shows different values. This version 2.0 uses all
the spatial data in geographic coordinates projected into Mercator projection.
2. Data is provided in both  ESRI's new and more powerful ArcGIS 8.1 as well as in ArcView 3.2 and ArcView 3.0 formats.

          3. Certain off-shore provinces has been expanded to include the 4000 meters water depth.
          4. Geologic characteristics and estimated values for undiscovered oil and gas resources have been added to geologic province coverage.
Up-dated histograms showing distribution of undiscovered oil and gas resources by Province have been added to Geologic
              Province Map.
          5. AutoPlay, advanced design feature, allows easier use and viewing of the data for Microsoft Windows users.

On this CD-ROM there are several data sets subdivided into directories:
1. ArcInfo coverages and export files:
  1.1. COV_GEO - coverage in geographic coordinates
  1.2. COV_TRAN - coverage in Mercator projection
1.3  EXP_GEO - ArcInfo Export (.e00) file in geographic coordinates
1.4. EXP_TRAN - ArcInfo Export (.e00) file in Mercator projection
1.5  EXP_SDTS -  export files in Spatial Data Transfer format.
2. ArcView 3.2 shape files in geographic coordinates:
2.1. AV_32 - all the shape files and corresponding data files. ArcView project AFR_AV32.APR uses these
shape files and displays Mercator projection. ArcExplorer project file AFRICA.AEP also uses the
same shape files but displays the original geographic coordinates.
  2.2. AV_30 - identical to AV_32 for ArcView 3.0 users.
3. ArcGIS 8.1 data in directory Arc_81:
3.1. AfricaDB.mdb - ArcGIS 8.1 personal geodatabase created from ArcInfo coverages.
 3.2. Africa.mxd - ArcMap 8.1 data set based on AfricaDB.mdb.
 3.3. .lyr - ArcMap 8.1 layer files.
These three major GIS data sets are supplemented by directories:
  1. PLOT - final printable maps in Adobe PDF format
  2. TEXT - text files for ArcInfo PROJECT command.
Purpose:
The data provide government, geologic community, consultants, and the general public with the  geological
basis for small scale natural resource surveys, exploration, and analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
There are four files in the root directory of the CD-ROM:

1. AFR_AV32.apr - ArcView 3.2 Project file (ESRI). This file is ready to use with ArcView 3.2 software. The file points to source
shapefiles in workspace \Win\AV_32. This project file depicts geology, latitude/longitude graticule, USGS geologic provinces, centerpoints
of oil and gas fields, country boundaries.
2. AFR_AV30.apr - ArcView 3.0 Project file (ESRI). This file is ready to use for ArcView 3.0 users. The file points to source
shapefiles in workspace \Mac\AV_30.
3. AFR_AV32.aep - ArcExplorer 1.1 Project file (ESRI). This file can be viewed with ESRI's freeware program, ArcExplorer
1.1. The file points to source shapefiles in workspace \Win\AV_32. This project file depicts the same shape files as the ArcView project.
ESRI's ArcExplorer 1.1 can be installed from this CD-ROM, or it can be downloaded FREE from the ESRI home page.
<http://www.esri.com>
4. Readme.htm - The CD readme file containing general information about the CD and its use.

The standard names for ArcInfo and ArcView 3.2 data sets are:
1. geo2_7 - Surficial geology.
2. fld2_7 - Oil and gas fields centerpoints.
3. llf2_7 - Lattitude-Longitude Grid.
4. pol2_7 - Country boundaries.
5. out2_7 - Area outline.
6. prov2_7 - USGS geologic provinces.

"PLOT" directory contains final maps in ADOBE PDF format ready to plot or view. It can be used in case of lack of ArcView
software to plot final paper maps.
"TEXT" - directory contains supplementary text files.
6. METADATA
Contains metadata in FGDC and HTML formats. A "project" and several "layer" metadata descriptions are given.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Overall accuracy is based on accuracy of general geology coverage. Because all the attributes are of character type, only correctness
of polygon labeling can be provided (see below).
 1. Attribute item "GLG" is abstracted from fill colors and patterns of source map denoting geologic age of surficial outcrops.
Units colored as land surface water bodies are attributed as "H2O". Sea and ocean are attributed as "Sea". Areas outside of African
   continent are labeled as "oth".
 2. Standard verification of attribute reliability is performed with the Arc/Info command LABELERRORS to find polygons
without assigned character value or with more than one value. A comparison between color plot and original paper map is
carried out by on-screen visual examination. The coverages are superimposed on a registered and rectified gray-scale scanned
image of the original map and inspected. All errors detected in attributes are corrected. The scanned images of each of five
sheets of original paper map (from UNESCO base geologic map) were transformed to Transverse Mercator projection
with RMS error not more than 2500 m (0.5 mm in original paper map). No rubber transformation applied. Gray-scale images
were used as background images in ARCEDIT digitizing. Maximum shift of a line in a coverage from centerline of its copy on image
did not exceed 1500-1700 m. Final plot of 1:5,000,000 scale was superimposed on top of original map, maximum error
   did not exceed 3500 m.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Value: good
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
This is a deductive estimate based on a polygon overlay of a coverage plot and the original materials.
Checks by both the compiler and an independent reviewer identified labeling and classification errors which were corrected.
Any remaining errors are most likely a result of misinterpretation of source data.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data set originated from a collection of ARC/INFO coverages that were topologically consistent. The fuzzy tolerance has been
consistent through each processing step (500 m or 0.005 degree). Based on this fuzzy tolerance value, all undershoots and overshoots
were detected and deleted. Execution of Arc/Info CLEAN command indicated the original coverage is topologically clean. Duplicate lines,
overshoots and undershoots, if any, were corrected. All polygons are closed and labeled. Polygons at the edge of the map are closed with
a map outer polygon.
Completeness_Report:
Several geologic age subdivisions on the original (UNESCO) 1:5,000,000 geologic map were combined into single unit.
As of May, 2000 generalizations of the original geologic map (UNESCO) were carried out:
 1.  All the Cretaceous units were combined into one.
 2. All the Precambrian subdivisions were combined into one.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Because original geologic maps are of 500 m. accuracy (0.1 mm on paper map of 1:5,000,000 scale), and
scanned images were of 200 dot/inch resolution (0.12 mm on paper),  the fuzzy tolerance for CLEAN
program in ARC/INFO was set to 500 m. Average positional accuracy can be evaluated as 1000 m or
 twice of the fuzzy tolerance.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 1.0 km
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
Overall relative position error was estimated by comparing a randomly selected set of locations on the ESRI
World country coverage to the shore line and state boundaries on the final geology coverage. RMS error is
1.0 km (0.2 mm of the original paper map).
