Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Oil and Gas Fields of the Caribbean Region (fld6bg)
    Abstract:
The Caribbean region is part of World Energy Assessment region 6 (Central and South America). A fundamental task in the assessment is to map the locations and type of production for existing oil and gas fields. The Petroconsultants database is the only available database that has coverage for the Caribbean region. Oil and gas field symbols represent field center-points and are published with permission from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation, 2002 database.

Why was the data set created?

This dataset is intended to depict the general location and production type of oil and gas fields in the Caribbean region as derived from the Petroconsultants (2002) database.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    n/a (source 1 of 1)
Petroconsultants International , Inc., 20021014, Petroleum exploration and production database for 2002:Petroconsultants Inc., Houston, Texas [database available from Petroconsultants, Inc., P.O. Box 740619, Houston, Texas 77274-0619]: Petroconsultants International Data Corp., Inc., Houston, Texas.

    Type_of_Source_Media: magnetic tape
Source_Contribution: Oil and Gas Field Center Points

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 01-Jan-2004 (process 1 of 2)
Using Microsoft Excel, a gas to oil ratio of 20,000 cubic feet to 1 barrel was used to determine predominate commodity production of a field. File exported as DBF file.

    Date: 02-Jan-2004 (process 2 of 2)
Digital data from the Petroconsultants database were mapped digitally using ArcGIS ArcInfo, and allocated to the geologic provinces using both the selection by location and field calculator tools.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The accuracy of the oil and gas field data, including the locations of the fields, is wholly dependent upon the accuracy of the data in the 2002 version of the Petroconsultants International database. For purposes of mapping the Caribbean region, data were assumed to be accurate at a scale of 1:2,670,000.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

The positions of the oil and gas fields were assumed to be accurate as presented by the latitude-longitude information in the Petroconsultants database.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Information is limited to reporting in the Petroconsultants (2002) database. Small oil and gas fields may not be represented in the database. No attempt was made to update database before its use.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Information is limited to reporting in the Petroconsultants (2002) database. A gas to oil ratio of 20,000 cubic feet to 1 barrel was used to determine predominate commodity production of a field. Nearly all attributes omitted from dataset to protect proprietary nature of data.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
