Abstract:

This dataset includes a modified subset of polygon features that describe U.S. Geological Survey's defined geologic provinces of the World. Each province has a set of geologic characteristics that distinguish it from surrounding provinces. These characteristics may include dominant lithologies, the age of the strata, and/or structural type. Each province is assigned a unique numeric code and may fall within two or more countries or assessment regions.

Purpose:

This dataset is intended to delineate geologic provinces of the Caribbean region.

Supplemental_Information:

Polygons were modified from the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Petroleum Assessment of 2000. Attributes from the 2000 assessment were transferred to the modified features.

Attribute accuracy is based solely on the results of the World Petroleum Assessment 2000, USGS publication DDS-60. Modification of the province boundaries performed by Regional Coordinator, Chris Schenk. A join was performed on the dataset to incorporate existing assessment results.

The following provinces have been added:

6126 - Grenada Back-Arc Basin 6127 - Barbados Accretionary Complex

The assessment results of province 6107 (Lesser Antilles Deformed Belt) were moved to province 6127 (Barbados Accretionary Complex), considering this is the same geographic extent the resource existed in previously.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Polygon topology exists. Geodatabase topology rules used to identify and correct gaps and overlaps in polygon feature class. Polygons are bounded at perimeter of extent.

Completeness_Report:

Geologic provinces are delineated by U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project Regional Coordinators and others with an emphasis on the determination of petroleum systems. Methods may vary from one region to another. In the Caribbean region, province boundaries were adjusted to more closely match surface geology and bathymetry.

It was not possible to quantify a horizontal positional accuracy of this dataset because it is a composite dataset compiled from a variety of sources using various methodologies. The original dataset used as a guide to delineate new boundaries was compiled at an average scale of 1:5,000,000 and had a maximum accuracy of 1000 meters. New boundaries were drawn on paper map containing surface geology, faults, and bathymetry printed at a scale of 1:2,670,000. Province boundaries are drawn based on subjective interpretation and then heads-up digitized. After compilation and registration of new data, a maximum accuracy of 2000 meters was considered appropriate.
