Included with the program are ‘HELP’ files to be used when executing the program and data files that contain the complete MRDS records for Puerto Rico. The program provided will execute in a Windows environment only. It will not run in a Macintosh or DOS environment. Kim P. Buttleman of the U.S. Geological Survey developed the Windows version of this retrieval software. Any comments or questions should be directed to kbuttlem@usgs.gov. Complete explanations for these commands can be found under the ‘Help’ menu for ‘Software’. Explanations for fields in the mineral database can be found under ‘Help/ Database’ The purpose of this Tutorial is to provide the steps necessary to make a simple retrieval, look at the data, and to produce output. Since there is only one database, the three steps involved in making a retrieval are; ADD, SEARCH, and BROWSE. Click ‘ADD’ to list the indexed fields of the records which can be used to search. The ‘BUILD SEARCH QUERY’ window appears (it may be behind another window). Highlight COMMOD and a listing of commodities and the number of occurrences appears. Select ‘Al’ with 2 occurrences. Click the ‘ADD’ button, and then the ‘DONE’ button. COMMOD and AL now appear in the first retrieval window. Other commodities or fields to be searched can be added at this time. Click ‘SEARCH’ and the database is searched for these records. In the upper right corner, HITS of ‘2’ now appears. Click ‘BROWSE’ and a browse window appears displaying selected records. Double click on either of these records, and the entire record appears with the selection criteria shown in red. Click ‘OUTPUT’ and these records can be printed to a file in several different formats. It is also possible to only output selected records and selected fields of records by selecting appropriate options.
