Multibeam Data and Socio-Economic Issues in West-Central San Francisco Bay

Approach

In 1997, the USGS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) contracted with C and C Technologies, Inc., from Lafayette, Louisiana, to collect bathymetric and acoustic backscatter data in west-central San Francisco Bay using a Simrad EM 1000 multibeam swath mapping system. The data have a 1-m horizontal accuracy navigated by differential global positioning system (DGPS) and 0.1-0.2m depth accuracy after tidal corrections to mean lower low water (MLLW). These highly accurate multibeam data and late-1960s acoustic data (Carlson and McCulloch, 1970) are used to address parts of the problems that have been raised.
