INTRODUCTION

The Long Island Sound Study (LISS) compiled data from a number of different sources, integrated new data, and asssembled a comprehensive spatial database for areas of the States of Connecticut, New York, and portions of Rhode Island which border Long Island Sound.  The majority of the database is formatted as an Arc/Info Library spanning the full extent of Long Island Sound and tiled according to USGS 7.5 quadrangles.  Additional data layers are included for Connecticut and New York as Arc/Info coverages.

The library and coverage data was designed to be accessed from Arc/Info and Arcview.   An AML program was designed to produce basemaps of varying size and complexity.  Additional AML programs were designed to allow simplified data distribution and database updates.  The LISS GIS library, as available from EPA, requires at least 675Mbytes for existing data; 1Gbyte is recommended to accomodate extraction of data from the library tape and general management tasks.  Data and programs external to the library are included and are stored in an hierarchical scheme by state and require approximately 20Mbytes without plot files and up to 500Mbytes with plot files.  The hierarchical scheme was designed to reflect the origin and extent of the component coverages.  Due to space constraints we have only included one coverage, the LISS bathymetry data layer, on this CD-ROM.

SOFTWARE

We have included a copy of ESRI's Win 95/98 ArcExplorer for the user to browse the bathymetric coverage with the full-resolution sidescan sonar mosaics that are stored in the appropriate sections of chapter two.  Also included is a copy of the Arcexplorer user guide in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF).   Included in the shapefile directory of this section are the 1983-datum compatible: NOAA 1:70,000 scale coastline coverage,  LISS GIS bathymetry, and the relavant state boundary files in geographic coordinates (world file projection).  If the user has Arcview 3.0 or a later version, the coverages can be opened with the "lissarcv.apr" project file that is in the CD-ROM root directory and it will provide all coverages as selectable options.  If the user has loaded the ArcExplorer software, the coverages can be accessed by opening the "lissexpl.aep" project file.
