00readme.txt file that describes USGS OF99-411 Hyndman, P.C. and Campbell, H.W., 1999, Digital mining claim density map for federal lands in New Mexico: 1996: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-411, 20 p. This report describes the contents of a digital data set (approximately 11 MB) consisting of an Arc/Info interchange format file and associated metadata. A page-sized, black-and-white version of the digital mine claim density map is included in the report. The data set is available on the World Wide Web at http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-411/. It is also available via anonymous FTP from: wrgis.wr.usgs.gov, in the directory pub/open-file/of99-411. Requirements: A networked computer system is required to copy the data set from the host computer across the Internet. A geographic information system (GIS) capable of importing Arc/Info interchange format (*.e00) files is required for viewing the digital files. The digital dataset files are in UNIX ASCII format. *************************************************** Explanation of digital data files for the 'Digital mining claim density map of federal lands in New Mexico: 1996' U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-411: 1. nm_clms.e00 - Mine claim density data set in Arc/Info interchange format for New Mexico (contains a relate file, nm_clms.rel, and the database nm_clms.clms) 2. 00readme.txt - this file 3. nm_clms.met - metadata text file 4. of99-411.pdf - Open-File Report text in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF) format 5. of99-411.tar.Z - a UNIX compressed TAR file containing nm_clms.e00, 00readme.txt, nm_clms.met, and of99-411.pdf Downloading files: 1. by anonymous FTP (using UNIX, Windows, or Macintosh) a. connect to the server - wrgis.wr.usgs.gov b. 'anonymous' is your logon name c. your email address is your password d. change to 'pub/open-file/of99-411' to access the digital files e. in UNIX, type 'dir' to see a listing of the files f. select 'binary' for data transfer g. use 'get ' in UNIX, or use your file manager to select and download the files h. use 'by' in UNIX, or 'exit' or 'quit' to end FTP process 2. with an internet browser: a. type 'http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-411' to access the web page for the open-file report b. to view a file, move the cursor to the file name and left-click on your mouse. c. to download a file, move the cursor to the file name and right-click on the mouse, select 'Save Link as...', 'Save Target As ...', or 'Save As' and identify the subdirectory in which you want to save the file. Mac users may drag and drop the file or use the menu to select and copy the file. Special note: The file, of99-411.tar.Z, may be downloaded as of99-411_tar.Z to Windows computers. If you open the of99-411_tar.Z file using Winzip, the software may ask you to name the file contained in the compressed file. Be sure the name is of99-411.tar for proper extraction by Winzip. To import the Arc/Info interchange-format files onto a UNIX workspace, copy the nm_clms.e00 file to your area, open Arc/Info on your workstation and enter 'import cover nm_clms nm_clms' at the Arc: prompt. You will need to use the 'relate' command in Arc/Info to connect the database to the digital coverage. An example of commands for using the relate in ArcEdit for selecting all claims in the Total Claims (tc) field is: 'relate restore nm_clms.rel' 'editcover nm_clms' 'editfeature
