INTRODUCTION

Open-File report 99-172 is a digital geologic map database of the Santa Ana 30' x 60' quadrangle that includes ARC/INFO (Environmental Systems Research Institute) version 7.1.1 coverages, associated tables, a graphics (PostScript) files, Portable Document Format (.pdf) files, a Word text file, and this README file in .pdf format. No paper map is included in the Open-File report, but a plot file containing an image of the geologic map sheet and the topographic base is included. A PostScript file containing an image of the Correlation of Map Units and an abbreviated Description of Map Units (sanana1cmu.eps) is included to complement the geologic map, and it is recommended that this document be plotted to accompany plots of the map. This document is also included as a .pdf format file for convenient on-screen viewing. Paper copies of a detailed Description of Map Units may be obtained by printing the .pdf file, sanana1dmu.pdf or the Microsoft Word text file, sanana1dmu.doc; the former contains boxes that show unit colors used on the geologic map. The Correlation of Map Units and Description of Map Units is in the format of USGS Geologic Investigations Series (GI-series) maps. This README file describes the digital data, such as types and general contents of files making up the database, and includes information on how to extract and plot the map and accompanying graphic file. Map units in the geologic map database and accompanying files are identified by standard geologic map criteria such as formation-name, age, and lithology. Even though this is an Open-File report and includes the standard USGS Open-File disclaimer, the report closely adheres to guidelines for stratigraphic nomenclature of the U. S. Geological Survey.

The two plotfiles are formatted to plot on 46 by 32 inch or larger sheets, so a large-format color plotter is required to produce a paper map. The best plotting results will probably be obtained when using the PostScript files.
