Description:
Abstract:
Two 21-day field operations were conducted in 1997 and 1998 in the estuaries and on the inner continental shelf off the northern Oregon and southern Washington coast. These cruises aboard the R/V Corliss were run in order to generate reconnaissance maps of the seafloor geology and the shallow subsurface stratigraphy using sidescan-sonar and seismic-reflection mapping techniques. The 1998 cruise also collected sediment grab samples, bottom photographs, and video images to verify the sidescan-sonar imagery and to document the seafloor geology. The combination of these data with previously collected sediment sample data (Robert, 1974; Nittrouer, 1978; and Smith et. al., 1980) has been used to define the extent and lithology of shelf sediments associated with the Columbia River littoral cell. This work is one component of a larger project studying the erosion of the Washington Oregon coasts and is being coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Washington State Department of Ecology. The reasons for collecting these data are to provide a regional synthesis of the offshore geology for this project and to support a wide variety of management decisions and to provide a basis for further process-oriented investigations.
Purpose:
This is a collection of JPEG images which are a result of scanning 35-mm negatives of still photos taken of the seafloor immediately prior to collecting a sediment sample. The still camera was mounted on the sediment grab sampler.

Data_Quality_Information:
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Each JPEG image is generated by digitizing a 35-mm seafloor photograph. The quality of each image is dependant on bottom visibility at the time the picture was taken, as well as the presence of a working strobe light.
Completeness_Report:
Still photographs were not taken at each sample location, therefore there is not a JPEG image that corresponds to every sediment sample. Various technical difficulties were encountered on the cruise which prevented the acquisition of 35-mm bottom photographs corresponding with every sediment sample.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The negatives of the 35-mm photographs were scanned with a negative scanner and saved in TIF image format. These TIF images were subsequently converted to JPEG format to decrease the file size. All of the processing was conducted post-cruise.

JPEG images of digitized seafloor bottom photographs. Each image corresponds to a sediment sample location.  The image filename corresponds to the Samp-id attribute of the 'grabsamp' ArcView shapefile. Location of actual 35-mm photographs is in close proximity to the sediment sample location.

Attribute_Label: Filename
Attribute_Definition:
The image filename corresponds to the sediment sample which was taken after the photograph. For example, 'sta15.jpg' corresponds to grab sample number 15. In the event that more than one photograph was taken at a sample station, this is indicated in the filename with a -(number). For example, 'sta2-1.jpg' refers to the first photograph taken at sample station number 2, and 'sta2-2.jpg' is the second photograph taken at sample station number 2. Unfortunatley, the strobe light failed after station 82, so images from station 83 and higher are not as well illuminated as the previous sample stations.
