1_README.TXT PROCESSED THEMATIC MAPPER SATELLITE IMAGERY FOR SELECTED AREAS WITHIN THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDERLANDS By John C. Dohrenwend(1), Floyd Gray(2), and Robert J. Miller(3) Open-File Report 00-309 Version 1.0 2001 This report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) editorial standards or with the North American Stratigraphic Code. QUICK START For those already familiar with Adobe Acrobat Reader and who have version 5.0 or higher on their computer, go directly to the file OF00-309.PDF. INTRODUCTION This CD-ROM publication consists of three discs (OF00_309_DISC1, OF00_309_DISC2, and OF00_309_DISC3). The study is summarized in the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) file OF00-309.PDF that is contained on all three discs. The discs also contain satellite full-scene images of selected areas along the U.S.-México border. These images are presented as high-resolution images in jpeg format (IMAGES folder of each CD-ROM). OF00_309_DISC1 contains images from the eastern borderland, OF00_309_DISC2 the central part, and OF00_309_DISC3 the western part. The folder LOCATIONS in each CD-ROM contains TIFF images showing exact positions of easily-identified reference locations for each of the Landsat TM scenes located at least partly within the U.S. A reference location table (BDRLOCS.DOC in MS Word format) lists the latitude and longitude of each reference location with a nominal precision of 0.001 minute of arc Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite full-scene images have been selected and processed for a large portion of the United States-México transborder region (FIGURES folder, Location.jpg). The Landsat TM images included on these CD- ROMs are digital color composites of middle, near infrared and visible light derived from TM bands 7, 4 and 2. The characteristics of the images were selected to facilitate coregistration with standard UTM projected map data and facilitate usage in a broad range of GIS and other graphical platforms. The passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), establishment of the Border Environmental Cooperation Commission (BECC) as well as the EPA U.S./México Border XXI Program has focused attention on the environmental, social-cultural, and economic conditions in the United States-México frontier and to the enhanced necessity of a binational, transborder approach in addressing problems. Currently, the border region is the location of numerous data collection and research activities by state and national government entities, Non- government organizations (NGOs), and Universities. Much of the work being done recognizes that the region's physical setting, ecological zones, and human phenomena extend uninterrupted across the international boundary and cannot be understood if restricted to one side of the border. Researchers and land managers representing both countries need current, accurate, and binationally compatible geospatial information to deal with such issues as water availability and pollution, natural resource sustainability, and human health. Towards this end, this assembled U.S.-México borderlands Thematic Mapper imagery is designed to be utilized as a fundamental part of a basic geographic information system database for natural resource, environmental, and land-management studies. FILES ON CD-ROM AND DATA ORGANIZATION The following files and folders are identical on all three discs in this 3-CD-ROM set. A detailed list of directories and files is given in the documentation file OF00-309.PDF. 1_README.TXT - This file. Acrobat folder - Installers for Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 for both Windows and Macintosh. Autorun.inf and id.ico - display files for Windows. FIGURES folder - Location.jpg is Figure 1 and TM_index.jpg is Figure 2 in the documentation files (OF00-309.PDF and OF00-309.DOC). The file Figures.txt gives details. metadata.txt and metadata.html - Metadata or "data about data" that describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of the Thematic Mapper image data. These metadata meet the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Metadata Standard. OF00-309.DOC - Documentation for this publication in MS-Word format. OF00-309.PDF - Documentation for this publication in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format. This file also has screen-resolution versions of the Landsat TM images. OF00-309.TXT - Documentation for this publication in ASCII Format but with graphics and formatting removed. version_history.txt - ASCII file that gives the bibliographical citation, version number(s), and version date(s). The following folders are different on each of the three discs in this 3-CD-ROM set. OF00_309_DISC1 contains images from the eastern borderland, OF00_309_DISC2 the central part, and OF00_309_DISC3 the western part. IMAGES folder - JPEG file of the Landsat TM images that have been created using minimum JPEG compression and average approximately 60 MB in size. LOCATIONS folder - The folder LOCATIONS contains TIFF images showing reference locations for each of the Landsat TM scenes. The file BDRLOCS.DOC is the same as Table 1 in OF00-309.PDF and gives details.
