U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 00-271 Title: Surface water data and geographic relation to Tertiary age intrusions and hydrothermal alteration in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) and intervening Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. by Dana J. Bove and Daniel H. Knepper- 2000 Description: Abstract: This data set covering the western part of Colorado includes water quality data from eight different sources (points), nine U.S. Geological Survey Digital Raster Graph (DRG) files for topographic bases, a compilation of Tertiary age intrusions (polygons and lines), and two geotiff files showing areas of hydrothermally altered rock. These data were compiled for use with an ongoing mineral resource assessment of theGrand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) and intervening Bureau of Land Management(BLM) lands. This compilation was assembled to give federal land managers a preliminary view of water within sub-basinal areas, and to show possible relationships to Tertiary age intrusion and areas of hydrothermal alteration. Purpose: These data were compiled for use with an ongoing mineral resource assessment of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) and intervening Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Getting Started: The contents and directories of this CD-ROM or website are listed below in the section Contents of the CD-ROM/website. There are five subdirectories within this CD-ROM/website that contain files in various formats that pertain to this publication. These directories include SHAPE, EXPORT, DRGS, ALTERATION, AND METADATA. The file ofrview.pdf is an overview of the location and extent of water datasets included in this publication and is located in the root directory of this CD-ROM/website. This file can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or greater. This viewer can be downloaded from the website http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/open-file-reports/. Be sure that the preferences (under file menu; general) are set to "fit in window" so that the entire image for the file ofrview.pdf is displayed when opened. There are also eight ArcExplorer 1.1 (ESRI) project files in the root directory of this CD-ROM. These files include amaxwater.aep, amlgmug.aep, idarado.aep, kirkwater1.aep, kirkwater2.aep, lakecity.aep, redmtn.aep, redwell.aep, and wrdgmug.aep. The project files (*.aep) point to source shapefiles in the subdirectory \shape and to digital raster graph files (DRG's) in the subdirectory \drgs. These project files depict thematically coded water quality information and show spatial relations to Tertiary age intrusions within western Colorado. The extent of these views and associated datasets are shown in ofrview.pdf. The project views are only intended as preliminary views of the associated data and by no means constitute a finished map product. Users of these project files are encouraged to portray the associated files in any way so desired and use the limited GIS capacities of the ArcExplorer program. This informaton is overlayed on corresponding topographic base maps (DRG files). IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the project files have specific file paths, the exact file and directory structure of the CD-ROM/website must be preserved when copying the contents of this report. For users without GIS software: ESRI's ArcExplorer 1.1 can be installed from the CD-ROM version of this publication by opening the self-extracting file aeclient.exe, or it can be downloaded free from the ESRI homepage- http://www.esri.com. Please see ARCEXPLORER section in the files ofr-00-271.* in the root directory of this report for more detailed information on the use of ArcExplorer with this publication. Compatible operating systems are: Microsoft Windows 95 or later, Microsoft Windows NT 3.5 or later and most Unix systems. Minimum hardware requirements: A CD-ROM drive, a color display monitor, and a mouse Minimum software requirements: Any text editor, ArcExplorer 1.1, and Adobe Acrobat 4.0 (see above instructions for download or extraction of these programs).
