William F. Cannon at the USGS provided the information in the fault attribute table. Logical_Consistency_Report: All internal polygons were checked for closure with vendor software and on hard copy plots. Overshoots and undershoots have been deleted or corrected as appropriate. Completeness_Report: Although, the coverages of the cross sections A and B (xsecta1, xsecta2, xsectb, xsecta_geo1, xsecta_geo2, and xsectb_geo) contain attributes and georeferencing information, they are not true geographic data. Rather, they were structured as coverages to allow correct scaling and positioning with respect to map view data. This allows the user to view the cross sections in relation to the geologic units. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The mine_workings, outcrops, and permred_arcs (from which xsect_lines, hydrology, faults, mag_anom, mines, dips and structure were extrapolated) coverages required rubbersheeting in Arc/Info. The geology coverage was not rubbersheeted. Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: W.F. Cannon, S.W. Nicholson, L.G. Woodruff, C.A. Hedgman, and K.J. The scale-stable materials were scanned at 300 dpi backwards to avoid scanning the extraneous information on the front. The images were immediately mirrored into the correct orientation. (The geology stable material was a negative and had to be inverted in order to extract the data from the scanned image. Also, tics could not be written on the negative so only the corners were used for registering.) Arc/Info coverages were generated from the scanned images by, first, converting the images to grids in ArcToolbox. Then in ARC/Info, the grids were converted into coverages which contained arcs and tics. The tics were aligned with the crosses in the arc coverages using ArcMap. Using ARC/Info, the coverages were registered. New tic coverages were generated with a geographic projection in decimal degrees. The tics corresponded with the bounding coordinates of the map. Then, the new tic coverages were projected with the following criteria: Projection Lambert; Datum NAD27; Units METERS; Spheroid CLARKE1866 parameters: First Standard Parallel = 33 0 0 Second Standard Parallel = 45 0 0 Central Meridian = -89 30 0 Reference Latitude = 0 0 0 False easting (meters) = 0.00000 False northing (meters) = 0.00000 The tic coverages of the scanned images were transformed to the new tic coverages and projected back into geographic in decimal degrees. The coverages did not align. In order to decrease the error, the coverages were rubbersheeted to a grid where a link was made at every 7.5' in the coverages and then adjusted in Arc/Info. This greatly reduced the error and the coverages aligned. The geology coverage was NOT rubbersheeted due to no reference locations. So error is least at the link locations (exact marks) and greater as one moves away from the link locations. The images were immediately mirrored into the correct orientation. (The cross-section geology stable material was a negative and had to be inverted in order to extract the data from the scanned image.) Due to the bend in cross section line A-A', the cross section had to be split for proper registration. There were no reference marks on the scale-stable material on the geology of the cross section. Therefore, the location of the division was measured. The location was labeled on the scale-stable material of the cross section lines. Arc/Info coverages were generated from the scanned images by, first, converting the images to grids in ArcToolbox. Then in ARC/Info, the grids were converted into coverages which contained arcs and tics. The tics were aligned with the corners of the top of the cross section in the arc coverage using ArcMap. Using ARC/Info, the coverages were registered so that they lined along the cross-sectional lines A-A' and B-B'. New tic coverages were generated with a geographic projection in decimal degrees. Then, they were projected projected with the following criteria: Projection Lambert; Datum NAD27; Units METERS; Spheroid CLARKE1866 parameters: First Standard Parallel = 33 0 0 Second Standard Parallel = 45 0 0 Central Meridian = -89 30 0 Reference Latitude = 0 0 0 False easting (meters) = 0.00000 False northing (meters) = 0.00000 The tic coverages of the scanned images were transformed to the new tic coverages and projected back into geographic in decimal degrees. In Arcview, the column "rotation" was added to each symbol. The symbols were rotated based on the rotation column in order to be in the correct orientation. The symbols were checked for accuracy against the symbols in permred_arc. The coverages matched very well except for the fault coverage. In Arc/Info, the fault coverage was digitized in order to align with the geology polygons exactly. Afterwards, all the coverages were converted to ArcView shapefiles and a project was created. Avl files were created for the shapefiles to keep the data as close to the color scheme as possible as the Ontonagon and Wakefield paper map.
