  Description:
    Abstract:   
        This metadata file (cdafldpl.met) describes three shape files. 

        Shape file cdasurf4_utm.shp, with its associated .shx and .dbf files,
        contains polygons and attributes for a map of geologic and wetland 
        units and systems, which represent sedimentary depositional 
        environments of the Coeur d’Alene (CdA) River valley. This map extends  
        beyond the lateral and longitudinal boundaries of the area studied 
        for this report.

        Shape file fldpln2.shp was derived from shape file cdasurf4.shp by 
        trimming it to the study area for this report, which includes the 
        CdA River channel and floodplain, from the confluence of its North 
        and South forks, to the base of its delta, in CdA Lake. 

        Shape file fpaream2.shp was derived from fldpln2.shp by merging its 
        1544 polygons into one polygon, representing the 85 square-kilometer
        area studied for this report.


    Purpose:   
        This data set was created to provide geomorphic context for studies 
        of the character, distribution, thickness, volume, tonnage, and metal
        content of metal-enriched sediment present on the floodplain of the 
        CdA River. These studies are being done in support of ongoing studies
        on the environmental impacts of industrial wastes derived from mining
        related activities in the CdA mining region, upstream. Those studies 
        include a Natural Resources Damage Assessment, being conducted by US
        Fish and Wildlife Service and others, and a Remedial Investigation/
        Feasibility Study being conducted by US Environmental Protection 
        Agency and others.
 

    Supplemental_Information:      
       Covered in this Metadata (cdafldpl.met) are three of six shape 
       files. The three shape files discussed here are (cdasurf4_utm.shp,
       fpaream2.shp, and fldpln2.shp). They were derived from Bookstrom and
       others(1999). These were modified and reprojected from Geographic to
       UTM, Zone 11, NAD27. Included with them are three AVLs 
       (cdasurf4_utm.avl, fpaream2.avl, and fldpln2.avl), which are used to
       format the ArcView legend. 

       Metadata pbsamthk.met describes two dBase4 files (alsamPb.dbf and 
       thkpb11.dbf). 

       Metadata pbrchseg.met describes three additional shape files 
       (segments.shp,rivreach.shp, and Pb1000.shp).

        This 1:24,000 digital map was used as a template on which the 
        additional layers could be added. These data also provided the 
        source data from which two additional ArcView shape files were
        derived (fldpln2.shp and fraream2.shp).

      Process_Description:
        Shape file cdasurf4_utm.shp/.shx/.dbf was modified from shape file 
        temp.shp/.shx/.dbf, which is included with a Digital Map of the 
        Surficial Geology, Wetlands, and Deepwater Habitats, Coeur d'Alene 
        River Valley, Idaho, by Bookstrom and others (1999). That report 
        is available on the USGS public access World Wide Web site on the 
        Internet at URL = http://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of99-548. 
        The map projection of temp.shp/.shx/.dbf was converted from 
        geographic to UTM, Zone 11, NAD 1927 to make 
        cdasurf4_utm.shp/.shx/.dbf. The table, cdasurf4_utm.dbf, was edited.
        The wetland-system classification of map unit Rbw (bank-wedge deposit)
        was changed from R (Riverine) to RU (transitional Riverine to Upland).
        A thematic column, USGS_REF was added to cite the data source
        (USGS Open-File Report 99-548).   

        To provide a theme showing a map of the study area, we modified
        cdasurf4_utm.shp. We deleted thematic columns not directly related 
        to this study. We clipped the eastern and western ends of
        the map to represent the study area of this report, which is the 
        floodplain of the CdA River, from the confluence of its North
        and South Forks, to the base of its delta front in CdA Lake. 
        We named this file fldpln2.shp. 

        To determine the areal extent of our study area (in square meters), 
        we generated a map of the study area by merging the 1544 polygons
        of fldpln2.shp into a single polygon. We named this new map theme
        fpaream2.shp, and calculated its area (85 square kilometers), using
        an ArcView script.

     This cdafldpl.met metadata has three geospatial datasets cdasurf4_utm,
     fldpln2 and fpaream2. The associated ArcView files are:
     cdasurf4_utm.shp/.shx/.dbf/.avl; fldpln2.shp/.shx/.sbx/.sbn/.dbf/.avl;
     fpaream2.shp/.shx/.dbf/.avl; and an APR file (cdapbofp.apr), which is 
     required to load this project into ArcView. The AVLs are included to
     format the shape file legends.

     The shape-file, cdasurf4_utm.shp, was used to generate fldpln2.shp,
