Publication_Date: 2001 Title: Inventory of Mines and Mining Related Facilities in Idaho and Western Montana Active Between 1997 Through 2000 Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: Open File Report Issue_Identification: OFR 01-129 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, CO Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Description: Abstract: The inventory summarizes data about sites in Idaho and western Montana where mining or processing of mined commodities occurred from 1997 through 2000. It includes activities sited on Federal, state, Native American and private lands. Commodities covered include all natural mineral materials, exclusive of common sand and gravel, and peat. Data recorded about individual sites include record number, commodities produced, site name, owner or operator, state, county, latitude and longitude of a site location point, description of the site location point, meridian, township, range, section, type of facility, site acreage, disturbed acreage, site size category, activity status at end of 2000, frequency of activity, deposit type and deposit model number, annual level of production, remaining site life, name and digital raster graphic identifier of 1:24,000 quadrangle and other comments. Records for 136 sites in Idaho and 91 sites in Montana west of the 108th meridian are tabulated in an Excel spreadsheet (active_mines_IDMT.xls). The Excel file is also saved as a dbf file (activesites_idmt.dbf) and in an Arcveiw event theme shapefile (activesites_idmt.shp). Purpose: The inventory was compiled to fully document the status and character of current and recent mining and ore processing activity in Idaho and western Montana for use in spatial data analysis and in conjunction with future mineral resource deposit potential assessment efforts. Completeness_Report: These data are believed to provide information on a complete listing of all mine and mineral processing sites within the study area that were active for some significant interval during the 4 year inventory period. It includes sites in the state of Idaho where surface disturbance exceeded 1/2 acre and in the state of Montana where surface disturbance exceeded 100 sq. ft. Activity status and other site attribute information has been thoroughly cross checked with information contained in operation and reclamation permit records maintained by the Idaho Department of Lands and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, and data stored in minerals activities related files of the U.S. agencies including the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), Environmental Protection Agency and Mine Safety and Health Administration, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Geologic Survey. Additional verification was obtained through interviews with regional staff of the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management and with operators. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Property locations are represented by a point location referenced to a distinguishing feature associated with the property. Location accuracy is dependent on the reference point feature selection. Features identifiable on U.S. Geological 7 1/2 minute series topographic map coverage are accurate to within 40 feet. Reference point features related to a PLSS land description, e.g. property centroids, are estimated to be accurate to within 800 m (0.5 mi).
