Data Model and Relational Database Design for the New England Water-Use Data System (NEWUDS)

Open-File Report 01-359

By Steven Tessler

The NEWUDS Database

The NEWUDS database described in this report is provided as zip archive files. Use a program such as WinZip to unzip the archives.  The Access 2000 version can be used within Access XP (version 2002). Two files are included in this distribution for each Access version. When copying the files from the CD-ROM, make sure the Read-Only attribute is turned off before opening the database.

NEWUDS_data.mdb - This is the main database documented in the report. It contains all tables and defined relationships, and the domain tables are populated as indicated in the associated report. The view and maintenance queries are also provided, as is the sample browsing form for Sites.

NEWUDS_fe.mdb - This is a front-end database file with links to the tables in NEWUDS_data.mdb. The front-end is not required for using NEWUDS (NEWUDS_data.mdb can be used alone). The front-end is provided to illustrate the front-end/back-end approach to managing your data, particularly with respect to extending the database with new accessory tables as described in the report. The view and maintenance queries, as well as the Site browsing form, that are provided in the main database file are also present in this front-end database file. To use the front-end on your system you will need to use Access's Linked Table Manager to reset the link paths to the location of NEWUDS_data.mdb as installed on your machine.
