Location and Mineral Economic Data Edition: First Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Microsoft Excel 98 spreadsheet Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Open-File Report Issue_Identification: 02-156A, B Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Menlo Park, CA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Description: Abstract: This dataset contains latitudes, longitudes, commodity, and mineral economic data for world phosphate mines, deposits, and occurrences. A second table contains the accompanying geologic data. The data in this compilation were derived from over 100 different published and non-published sources. This dataset includes 2 tables: a table of the data collected for USGS Open-File Report OF02-156B, which contains location data, and a table of the data for companion report USGS Open-File Report OF02-156A, which contains geologic data for the same sites. Purpose: This dataset was compiled from several smaller datasets previously compiled by Carlotta Chernoff of the University of Arizona and Greta Orris of the USGS and from new data. The more complete dataset was needed to better classify phosphate deposits and evaluate their distribution and occurrence. Supplemental_Information: This dataset consists of two Excel 98 spreadsheet files, OF02156A.xls and OF02156B.xls. OF02156B.xls contains latitudes, longitudes, commodity, reference, and mineral economic data for the phosphate mines, deposits, and occurrences in the database. The second spreadsheet includes the companion geologic data from OF02-156A, including host rock, age, mineralogy, and other information Time_Period_of_Content: Currentness_Reference: The currentness of the data varies from site to site depending on the recentness of the source materials. Orris and C.B. Chernoff compiled the data on world phosphate deposits from previously published compilations, new published sources, "gray" literature, company internet sites, and other sources. Locations were commonly taken from published sources, no effort was made to determine the correctness of these data beyond a preliminary review to be sure they plot in the correct country. Other locations were found using the GEOnet Names server on the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's website, www.nima.mil. Still other locations were determined using available maps of varying scales. Most of the latitudes-longitudes are believed to be within 5 minutes of their true locations, but other locations may be highly inaccurate due to inadequate or incorrect location data. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The accuracy of file data attributes is highly variable, especially for some parts of Africa and Asia. Most locations are believed to be within 5 minutes of the exact location; some locations are for the nearest town, and other locations may be highly inaccurate. Location errors are a result of inadequate or incorrect original data, error caused by multiple locations with the same name, and error introduced by data entry or location format conversion. Data were plotted at a preliminary stage to check that sites plotted in the correct country and the data tables were spot-checked (1 in 5 records) against the original data. Logical_Consistency_Report: Point data is given in latitude/longitude decimal degrees. Completeness_Report: This report is the most complete compilation of phosphate mines, deposits, and occurrences known. However, it is highly likely that there are additional phosphate sites that are not included. In addition, data for many of the sites are incomplete. Determination of latitudes and longitudes for some sites were impossible given the available data. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The horizontal positional accuracy of the digital data was checked to be sure that they plotted within the correct country. The latitudes and longitudes were largely determined using latitude-longitudes given in one of the references or determined from descriptions of the location using the maps available to us or the GEOnet Names server on the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's NIMA database. The accuracy of these locations vary with the detail of the original information.
