  • Syringe
  • Ruler
  • Tape Measure
  • Color Chart
  • Log Book
  • Spatula
  • Balance
  • Sample Containers

Remove the remaining overlying water with a syringe. Suck off overlying water with syringe; link to larger image

Extrude the sediment until the lowest point on the surface is at the top of the core barrel.

Measure the amount of surface relief from the lowest to the highest point of the exposed core.

Measure amount of surface relief; link to larger image
Secure a tape measure to the side of the core barrel and record the lowest point on the piston in centimeters. Secure measuring tape and record lowest point; link to larger image
Describe and record the surface sediment using the color chart. Describe surface with color chart; link to larger image
Use the hydraulic jack to extrude the desired amount of sediment up from the core tube that you wish to section. Extrude desired amount you wish to section; link to larger image
Monitor the piston movement relative to the tape measure and record the lowest point on the piston in centimeters. Measure the amount you extruded; link to larger image

Tare an empty container on the balance.

Tare balance with empty cup

Using a titanium spatula, trim the edge of the sediment into the container.

Record the weight of the trimmings from the balance.

Describe, record, and remove biota from exposed core.

Use the titanium spatula to sample the remaining sediment into labeled sample containers.

*You may need to follow the surface slope for the first few intervals, depending on the amount of surface relief.

Collect core section with spatula into cup; link to larger image
Homogenize the sample in the sample container using the same titanium spatula from which you sampled that level of the core. Mix sample in cup to homogenize
Make the required aliquots and record the weights from the balance. Make aliquots and recod weights
Using vice grips with taped jaws, crimp the hinges of the aliquot vials to ensure proper closure. Crimp edge of vial; link to larger image
Place bulk samples in the freezer or the refrigerator. Place bulk sample in freezer
Place texture and c. perf aliquots in the refrigerator. Place aliquot vilas into the refrigerator

Record data in the log book.

For each core level sampling, use a clean titanium spatula and repeat steps above.
