Why was the data set created?

Canada Provinces provides the provinces and territories of Canada with detail appropriate for national, regional, and local levels. This is a subset of the original dataset. It has been clipped to the extent of the Gulf of Maine surficial sediment GIS project area. It is used as a general basemap data layer to illustrate the Canadian provinces, boundaries and coastline for the Gulf of Maine Surficial Sediment GIS project area.

    DMTI Spatial Inc. - 2 to 50 (source 1 of 1)
    Inc., DMTI Spatial , 20001020, Canadian Data Bundle - Data sets from CanMap with source scales of 1:2000 to 1:50,000.:, DMTI Spatial Inc., Markham, Ontario, Canada.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 20-Oct-2000 (process 1 of 3)
    The data set is a fully georeferenced, purely digital product. The boundaries are digitized from CanMap. Source data ranges from municipal mapping at a very large scale of 1:2,000 or larger, to a medium scale of 1:50,000 scale from NTDB*. Source time period of content ranges from a few to several years (as in the case of NTDB*). *NTDB is the National Topographic Data Base, developed and maintained by Natural Resources Canada.

    The following steps were performed by ESRI for Data & Maps 2002: removed erroneous island at 80 N 135 W, changed "Newfoundland" to "Newfoundland and Labrador", and deleted sliver polygons.

    The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted data set from DMTI Spatial Canadian Data Bundle. Reduced the width of Name attribute. Added Area attribute calculating its values in square kilometers. Added Fips_admin attribute from FIPS 10-4 tables. Added Pop1996 and Dwell1996 attributes aggregating their values from Canada Municipalities. Created ArcGIS™ layer file (.lyr). Created ArcView legend file (.avl). Created projection file (.prj). Ran ArcView Avenue request ExportClean, and created spatial indices.
