MICROORGANISM_TYPE: Lichen

MICROORGANISM: Lichen

LATIN_NAME: Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia

COLLECTION_LOCALITY: Lime Creek, San Juan Mountain, Colorado (37 degrees 41 minutes N latitude; 107 degrees 45 minutes W Longitude).

SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

This sample of lichen was collected from Lime Creek in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado (37 degrees 41 minutes N latitude; 107 degrees 45 minutes W Longitude). The spectrum was measured in the laboratory under a tungsten lamp (directly overhead) with the bare fiber optic head of the ASD FR spectrometer pointed at an approximately 20 degrees off of nadir. Species identification was made by USGS Biologist Larry Gough. The appearance of the mature lichen was noted as "sea green" in color with extensive thick thalli, brown "apothecia", brown spore bodies 2-5mm each over 10% of the surface. The measurement of the lichen was made with it still in place on the surface of a rock (Sample ID = SJ96-LC1).
