    Sidescan-sonar Tracklines in Geographic Coordinates from Lake Mohave - 2002
    Abstract:
    Lake Mohave is one of several multi-purpose reservoirs that have been constructed on the Colorado River. The lake was formed upon completion of the Davis Dam in 1953. No mapping of the floor of the lake had been conducted since completion of the Davis Dam. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with researchers from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, completed a geophysical survey of this lake in April 2002. The survey included collection of sidescan sonar imagery of nearly the entire lake floor, and high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles along widely spaced lines throughout the lake. The detailed mapping of the lake floor was used to determine the amount of sediment that had accumulated in the lake since impoundment, its distribution, and the processes of deposition.

This shapefile defines the tracklines along which sidescan-sonar data were collected.


How was the data set created?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    (process 1 of 4)
    Navigation was acquired by a Hypack navigation system and stored with the Edgetech sidescan sonar data on a QMIPS computer data acquisition system. A unique navigation point was sent to the acquisition system approximately every 10 seconds. Upon extracting the sidescan-sonar data from the acquisition system, the navigation was downsampled to 1 minute intervals.

    This 1 minute navigation was then reviewed for errors and sometimes further downsampled to enable the swath of sidescan-sonar imagery to have a smooth track.

    An AWK script was then used to reformat the individual navigation files and combine them into one comma delimited text file appropriate for importing into ArcView.

    This ASCII file was then imported and added as an event theme within ArcView 3.2a. This event theme was then converted to a polyline shapefile using an Avenue script that converts points to lines based on a unique line identifier within the attribute table.
