Abstract:
Polygons in the NR_MAPS spatial database represent the geographic extent of maps used as the primary source of information for the NR_GEO geologic map spatial database.
Purpose:
NR_MAPS is an index of geologic maps used in the NR_GEO compilation. NR_MAPS provides a layer for use in a GIS to define the geographic extent (along with base map scale, printed source map scale, and a complete reference) for which each of the major source maps contributed areal geologic data to the NR_GEO spatial database. Its greatest use is to quickly show the user what sources were used in compiling NR_GEO. It is especially useful for correlating the location of a source map to its respective USGS topographic quadrangle or national forest: NR_MAPS provides a frame of reference, because many of the source maps represent all or part of a USGS topographic map or a national forest.

The NR_MAPS spatial database covers an area that includes most of Idaho north of the Snake River Plain, the west half of Montana, and a narrow sliver of northeast Washington.

If the user has modified the data in any way, they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor imply that changes they made were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dataset was copied from the NR_GEO spatial database. Polygons were dissolved on MAP_TILE item attributes. The SOURCE item was added to the polygon attribute table (NR_MAPS.PAT) and attributed. The NR_GEO.BIB look-up table was joined to the NR_MAPS.PAT (using the SOURCE item), and all items (and their attributes) were added to the NR_MAPS.PAT. And finally, the SOURCE item was deleted from NR_MAPS.PAT.
