Abstract:
Preliminary bedrock geologic map of the Stepens City 7.5 minute quadrangle, Clarke, Frederick, and Warren, Counties, VA, USA.
Purpose:
This map was produced to provide basic geologic information for land-use planning and ground-water aquifer studies. This data will be incorporated into a 3-dimesional model of the hydrogeologic framework of the lower Shenandoah Valley.

Process_Description:
All structural measurements were done in the field with a Brunton geologic transit read to the nearest degree. A digital geographic base layer was created by georegistering then rectifying a .tiff image of the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle. RMS error was required to be less than 3 meters (10 ft) in ground units. Geologic data was captured in the field as point locations via a Trimble GeoXM GPS-enabled handheld computer running ArcPad GIS software. The shape files were converted to ArcGIS geodatabases and edited over the basemap in ArcMap 9.0. Test plots were generated and provided to the authors for comparison to the original data and corrections made to all errors identified. The feature classes were then exported back to shapefiles for distribution.
