Most major and trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry following multi-acid (HCl-HNO3-HClO4-HF) digestion (Briggs and Meier, 2002). Mercury was determined by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (Brown et al., 2002a), Se by hydride-generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Hageman et al., 2002), total S and total C by combustion (Brown and Curry, 2002a,b), and CO2 and carbonate carbon by coulometric titration (Brown et al., 2002b). Additional details regarding sample preparation and detection limits are found in Taggert (2002). In addition, gold in fourteen samples was analyzed by the fire assay technique at XRAL Laboratories, Toronto, Canada. Detailed mineralogical descriptions and electron microprobe data for sulfide minerals are presented in Koski and others (2008). Twenty-six sediment samples from the Ellamar, Threeman, and Beatson sites were analyzed in laboratories of the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado (table 4). Major and trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry following multi-acid (HCl-HNO3-HClO4-HF) digestion (Briggs and Meier, 2002) except for mercury, which was analyzed by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (Brown et al., 2002).
