This metadata provides details on the cartographic production methods developed for digital map files and habitat data used in the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Florida Shelf Habitat Map Project. FLaSH Map was initiated in 2006 to accomplish goals set for USGS Coastal and Marine Geology National Benthic Habitat studies. In many instances, existing data were reformatted for use with Web-based technologies and user-friendly visualization tools implemented by FLaSH Map. In these instances, the metadata file explains the steps taken to incorporate the data set into the larger body of work. Data sets were pre-processed for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS) geo-database, and for visualization in one of several Web-based tools: an Internet Map Service (IMS), an interactive .html, or a .kml format for use in a global viewer such as World Wind or Google Earth. The Florida shelf bathymetry data are derived from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Electronic Navigational Charts and from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) The Digital Nautical Chart®.
<purpose>The primary goal of FLaSH Map is to map and characterize benthic habitats of the Florida shelf by combining existing and new data in user-friendly Web-based and computer mapping tools. FLaSH endeavors to identify data gaps, establish appropriate scales and resolutions, develop sea floor and habitat classification schemes, extrapolate results from regional to national settings, develop prediction and modeling capabilities, and expand our understanding of geologic processes, and environmental and human-induced change. The broad goals for the project are to disseminate information to the public through user-friendly Web-based technology, publish research results, manage data effectively, provide information to management agencies, and facilitate intra- and interagency and international collaboration on benthic habitat research. The purpose of this data layer is to provide bathymetry contours.</purpose>
<supplinf>Existing data consisting of x,y,z point data was converted, gridded, and contoured for visualization of Florida shelf bathymetry. Final file formats include ArcMap shapefile format for GIS (.shp), .jpg files for html viewing, and .kml files for viewing in Google Earth.</supplinf>
