Title:
H11346_GEO25: 25-m Bathymetric Grid of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Survey H11346 in the Vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts (Geographic, WGS84)
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the combined single-beam and multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. During August 2008 seismic-reflection profiles (Boomer and Chirp) were acquired, and during September 2008 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of two ground-truth reconnaissance surveys.

Why was the data set created?

To release a grid of the 25-m bathymetry generated from NOAA survey H11346 in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts in a geographic coordinate system.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    (source 1 of 1)
National Ocean Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminis, Unpublished Material, H11346 bathymetry.

    Type_of_Source_Media: disc
Source_Contribution: Original processed single-beam and multibeam bathymetric data.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2004 (process 1 of 6)
The bathymetry data were acquired in XTF (extended Triton data format) and recorded digitally through an ISIS data acquisition system. Reson 8101 and 8125 multibeam echosounders and Odom vertical-beam echosounders hull-mounted on 29' launches deployed from the NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson were used to acquire the sounding data. All positioning and attitude were determined with TSS POS/MV 320 DGPS-aided inertial navigation systems. The data were processed using CARIS HIPS (Hydrographic Image Processing System) software for quality control, and to incorporate sound velocity and tidal corrections. Sound velocity corrections were derived using frequent SEACAT CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) profiles. Typically, a CTD cast was conducted every four to six hours of multibeam acquisition. Tidal zone corrections were calculated from data acquired at the Nantucket tidal gauge and a tertiary gauge at Edgartown, MA. The vertical resolution of the multibeam data is approximately 0.5% of the water depth. The data were gridded to 3-m resolution and saved as a CARIS HIPS database. Because the data are primarily single-beam bathymetry, gaps existed between the tracklines. Vertical datum is mean lower low water; X and Y units are meters; UTM Zone 19, NAD83.
