Description:
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data collected north of Orient Point, New York. During April 2010, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a USGS ground-truth reconnaissance survey. Purpose:
The purpose of this dataset is to release the locations and identifiers of 106 bottom photographs collected at 26 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the seafloor in Long Island Sound north of Orient Point, New York. The photos were collected with a modified Van Veen grab sampler modified to carry still and video camera systems (small SEABOSS) during USGS survey 2010-010, conducted April 14-21, 2010.

The naming convention for photographs is a 2-letter location identification (op, for Orient Point), the station number, and a letter of the photograph at that station (multiple photos are often taken at a single location), an underscore, and the resolution of the photograph (fr for full resolution, mr for medium resolution, and tn for thumbnail). For instance, op4a_mr.jpg is a photograph from Orient Point, station 4, photo a, medium resolution and is in JPEG format.
