Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: U.S. Geological Survey Publication_Date: 2012 Title: Preliminary Quaternary Geologic Map and Database of the Newberry Springs 30' x 60' Quadrangle, California Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Other_Citation_Details: Open-File Report 2011-1044 Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2011/1044 Description: Abstract: The surficial geologic map database of the Newberry Springs 30x60 minute quadrangle presents characteristics and physical properties of surficial geology for an area approximately 5,000 sq km in the eastern Mojave Desert, California. The data are presented at a scale of 1:100,000. The new surficial mapping was conducted between 2001 and 2006, and is compiled with previous bedrock mapping, simplified to emphasize lithologic source material. Surficial geology is mapped and described based on depositional process and age categories that reflect the mode of deposition, pedogenic effects occurring post-deposition, and, where appropriate, the lithologic nature of the material. The database is distributed in 3 parts: spatial map-based data, documentation, and printable map graphics of the database. Spatial data is distributed in ESRI geodatabase format or in ESRI interchange (e00) format. Documentation includes the map pamphlet, which provides a discussion of the surficial geology and describes the format and content of the map data. The documentation also includes FGDC metadata for the spatial map information. Map graphics files are distributed as Postscript and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files, and are appropriate for representing a view of the spatial database at the mapped scale. Purpose: One of a series of 1:100,000 scale surficial maps and geologic databases of the Mojave Desert region produced to aid in understanding the potential long-term effects of urban development and land use. The multi-purpose surficial geologic maps and databases produced by this project contain information that is being used for land-management decisions with regard to (1) ground-water availability, (2) natural hazard risks, such as earthquakes, landslides, and debris flows, (3) ecosystem sustainability, and (4) effects of climate change. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. For the purpose of this database, lines coded as "well-located" represent contacts and faults located with an accuracy greater than 10 m and commonly greater than 5 m. Lines coded as "approximately located" represent contacts and faults located with an accuracy of 10 to 15 m. Lines coded as "gradational" are contacts that represent gradational boundaries between adjacent units. Gradational contacts represent interleaving of sediments and smooth gradations in characteristics such as percentage of eolian sand. In general, these gradations take place over distances of 50 to 150 m. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Metadata imported. The digital maps, along with their associated symbology, have been converted to uncompressed ARC/INFO export files for distribution. ARC export files promote ease of data handling, and are usable by some Geographic Information Systems in addition to ARC/INFO. Additionally, ARC export files are files that contain both the spatial and associated database information, so that it is possible to read and interpret the files and write simple code to convert the files to a format more convenient to the user, should no such code be available off-the-shelf. The ARC export file and accompanying symbology files related to map symbology are described below: OFR2011-1044.e00 Faults, depositional contacts, and geologic units in the quadrangle OFR2011-1044_polygon.lyr ArcMap layer file for geologic units (specifies geologic unit symbology) OFR2011-1044_arc.lyr ArcMap layer file for geologic boundaries (specifies geologic contact symbology) OFR2011-1044_polygon.style ArcMap style (basic symbology elements) for polygons OFR2011-1044_arc.style ArcMap style (basic symbology elements) for arcs OFR2011-1044_readme.txt readme file explaining digital database Distribution_Liability: Use of the database beyond the intended map scale (1:100,000) is not recommended.
