Title:
2011_006_CRSEDDATA.SHP: Surficial Sediment Data Collected During RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA in the Vicinity of Cross Rip Channel in Nantucket Sound off Southeastern Massachusetts (Geographic, WGS84)
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Bathymetry, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities off southern New England, shows the character and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. During April-May 2009 NOAA completed hydrographic survey H12007 in the vicinity of Cross Rip Channel in Nantucket Sound off southern Cape Cod, Massachusetts and during June 2011 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of ground-truth reconnaissance surveys of this area. Interpretations were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data and the ground-truth data used to verify them.

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Textural data and visual descriptions produced from stations of the RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA that fall within the study area in Nantucket Sound. Visual descriptions of sediment texture were used in areas where samples could not be collected (e.g., rough sea state, swift tidal currents). These stations can be differentiated by the presence of the nodata value '-9999' in all of the numeric analytical fields. However, the navigation and station identifiers are known.

Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this data set is to release the locations, identifiers, grain-size data and(or) textural descriptions of surficial sediments collected at 24 stations on bathymetric data of the sea floor in the vicinity of Cross Rip Channel in Nantucket Sound, offshore southeastern Massachusetts in Geographic, WGS84. These data can be used to provide information on surface geology and sedimentary processes.

Fourteen samples were collected with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) equipped with a still and video camera. Visual descriptions were used for 10 additional stations where samples could not be collected. Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Science Center. Coarse fraction determined by sieve; fine fraction determined by Coulter Counter. See Poppe, Williams, and Paskevich (2005) for analytical specifics.

An ESRI shapefile was created in ArcView 3.3 from an ASCII comma-delimited file created by the laboratory's software. The file was added as an Event theme and subsequently converted to a shapefile. This includes verbal textural descriptions for the 9 stations where samples could not be collected. A value of -9999 is a NODATA value entered where samples were not physically collected.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

All attributes were checked in a consistent manner.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Navigation was by differential GPS. Although GPS gave the ships' positions rather than that of the SEABOSS, the antenna was located less than 5 m from the blocks on the davit and A-frame, water depths were generally shallow, and scope of the cable minimal. Therefore, SEABOSS offset from the antenna was less than 10 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

Depths were measured by the ship's fathometer, are provided are in meters, and are uncorrected for tides.

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

All available grain-size data collected within the study area in Nantucket Sound during the RV Rafael cruise 2011-006-FA are included in this data set. Stations range from CR1 to CR24.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No additional checks for consistency were performed on this data.
