This dataset represents the boundaries of the Appalachian Basin Study Area in the Eastern United States, encompassing all or parts of the counties in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Purpose:
This dataset can be used to display the boundaries of the Appalachian Basin Study Area in the Eastern United States, encompassing all or parts of the counties in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. It is available in shapefile and Zipped Keyhole Markup Language (KMZ) formats, and can be viewed using ArcGIS, Google Earth, or any software package that supports these data formats.

Figure 1 of "Assessment of Undiscovered Carboniferous Coal-Bed Gas Resources of the Appalachian Basin and Black Warrior Basin Provinces, 2002" was saved as a JPEG image, imported into ArcMap, georeferenced, and the boundaries of the Pottsville Coal-bed Gas Total Petroleum System were digitized and saved as a shapefile. This new shapefile was then merged with the Province 67 shapefile in Process Step 1.

The shapefile of county outlines was downloaded from the National Atlas and added to the ArcMap project. Four counties in Alabama, Fayette, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, and Greene, were selected and saved as a new shapefile. This new shapefile was then merged with the shapefile created in Process Step 2, to make the final version of the study area outline.
