However, the map was constructed on a planimetric base and incorporates inconsistent geographic distortion and lacks a topographic base, both of which are essential for scientific use. Numerous studies and mapping have been conducted since 1967 and this geologic compilation aims to include the most modern geologic mapping from published and academic sources and includes new mapping conducted in conjunction with this project. This dataset includes a modern digital geologic database that can be utilized in GIS (Geographic Information System) applications to aide BBNP researchers. Purpose: To provide the National Park Service and the general public with an updated digital geologic map. The digital dataset is intended to reflect new (1) mapping of Late Cretaceous to Tertiary clastic sedimentary rocks, (2) park-wide mapping of surficial deposits, and (3) a newly revised volcanic stratigraphy. Supplemental_Information: FILES INCLUDED WITHIN THIS DATA SET: The data were compiled in ESRI Arc 9.3 as coverages. Data are also included as ArcGIS geodatabase and shapefile format bbnp_geol: geologic map database; includes geologic features such as contacts, faults, and dikes and their interaction to form bounded polygons that are attributed with the geologic unit symbol and name corresponding to that included in the Description of Map Units in the accompanying pamphlet. bbnp_att: bedding attitudes bbnp_fold: fold axes bbnp_age: geochronologic data corresponding to Table 1 in the accompanying pamphlet. bbnp_xsect: cross section lines topographic base map compiled from USGS 1:100,000-scale topographic maps bbnp_boq_base.tif/.tfw (Boquillas) bbnp_chisos_base.tif/.tfw (Chisos Mountains) bbnp_sant_base.tif/.tfw (Santiago Mountains) Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Single_Date/Time: Calendar_Date: 201x Currentness_Reference: Publication date Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: None planned Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -103.78546148 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -102.83109409 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 29.70080493 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 28.9573439 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: AGI Glossary of Geology Theme_Keyword: geologic map Theme_Keyword: alluvial deposit Theme_Keyword: basin-fill Theme_Keyword: sedimentary rock Theme_Keyword: clastic Theme_Keyword: carbonate Theme_Keyword: volcanic rock Theme_Keyword: Laramide orogeny Theme_Keyword: Basin and Range Theme_Keyword: fault Theme_Keyword: fold Theme_Keyword: intrusive rock Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: Board of Geographic Names Place_Keyword: USA Place_Keyword: Texas Place_Keyword: Brewster County Place_Keyword: Big Bend National Park Place_Keyword: Santa Elena Canyon Place_Keyword: Boquillas Canyon Place_Keyword: Persimmon Gap Place_Keyword: Panther Junction Place_Keyword: Study Butte Place_Keyword: Terlingua Place_Keyword: The Basin Place_Keyword: Chisos Mountains Stratum: Stratum_Keyword_Thesaurus: National Geologic Map Database Geologic Names Lexicon (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/geolex_home.html) Stratum_Keyword: Burro Mesa Formation Stratum_Keyword: South Rim Formation Stratum_Keyword: Chisos Formation Stratum_Keyword: Canoe Formation Stratum_Keyword: Hannold Hill Formation Stratum_Keyword: Black Peaks Formation Stratum_Keyword: Javelina Formation Stratum_Keyword: Aguja Formation Stratum_Keyword: Pen Formation Stratum_Keyword: Boquillas Formation Stratum_Keyword: Buda Limestone Stratum_Keyword: Del Rio Clay Stratum_Keyword: Santa Elena Limestone Stratum_Keyword: Sue Peaks Formation Stratum_Keyword: Del Carmen Limestone Stratum_Keyword: Telephone Canyon Formation Stratum_Keyword: Maxon Sandstone Stratum_Keyword: Glen Rose Limestone Stratum_Keyword: Tesnus Formation Stratum_Keyword: Caballos Novaculite Stratum_Keyword: Maravillas Formation Temporal: Temporal_Keyword_Thesaurus: International Commission on Stratigraphy (http://www.stratigraphy.org) Temporal_Keyword: Quaternary Temporal_Keyword: Holocene Temporal_Keyword: Pleistocene Temporal_Keyword: Tertiary Temporal_Keyword: Pliocene Temporal_Keyword: Miocene Temporal_Keyword: Oligocene Temporal_Keyword: Eocene Temporal_Keyword: Paleocene Temporal_Keyword: Cretaceous Temporal_Keyword: Paleozoic Temporal_Keyword: Pennsylvanian Temporal_Keyword: Mississippian Temporal_Keyword: Devonian Temporal_Keyword: Silurian Temporal_Keyword: Ordovician Access_Constraints: none Use_Constraints: Users of this geospatial database and geologic information derived there from should acknowledge the U.S. Geological Survey as the source of the data. Authors and USGS map editors performed separate reviews. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other errors by the authors. Automated routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. Check plots of the map were reviewed by at least two other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Geologic map units were collected and digitized at appropriate resolution for portrayal on a base at 1:75,000-scale. Detailed mapping was generalized to a scale-appropriate resolution. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Potential exists for errors in location by the geologist in the field and considering the scale of the map presentation numerous geologic features were generalized or removed. However, vectorized linework was adjusted to align with black and white and color infra-red digital orthophotographs with 1 meter resolution where geologic features could be confidently identified. Overall horizontal accuracy is estimated to be less than 50 meters.
