Scientific Investigations Report 2007–5157

Introduction

Explanation: Table of water-use activities

The table of water-use activities includes information on withdrawal, demand, consumptive use, and return flow by town (see example from Portsmouth below). Information on community water systems includes names, estimated or reported withdrawal by source, and population served. If a community water system withdraws water from sources outside the town, the outside source and town are named, and the amount withdrawn is given. These amounts, however, are not included in the town total.

The categories of domestic, industrial, commercial, and irrigation uses are further subdivided by withdrawal and delivery to users and release and return flow from users. Information on community wastewater systems includes name, return flow by receiving water body, and population served. The water-use information is presented as total withdrawal by ground water and surface water, return flow to ground water and surface water, demand, consumptive use, unaccounted-for use, inflow and infiltration, delivery by public suppliers, releases into sewers, and self-supplied withdrawal and septic return flow.
