INFORMATION ON THIS PUBLICATION This
report is an evaluation of oil and gas resources for petroleum systems
of the Putumayo-Oriente-Maranon province of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
This assessment is a product of the World Energy Project of the U.S. Geological
Survey, under the direction of Thomas Ahlbrandt. For this project, the
land surface of the Earth was divided into 8 regions and 937 geologic provinces
for purposes of assessing global oil and gas resources. Provinces were
then ranked based on volumes of discovered petroleum, and on this basis
76 “priority” provinces and 25 “boutique” provinces were selected for individual
study. Priority provinces, such as the Putumayo-Oriente-Maranon province,
are all outside the U.S. and were selected for their high ranking. Boutique
provinces are also exclusive of the U.S. and were chosen for various geologic
and other reasons. The petroleum geology of these provinces is described
in a series of reports like the one presented here. Complete oil and gas
resource assessment results are presented in USGS DDS-60 (2000), although
some data and results are contained within individual province reports. MINIMUM

AND DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS DIGITAL DATA SERIES PUBLICATION To
get started 1.
Viewing the contents of this publication requires installation on a computer
of Adobe Acrobat Reader, v. 4.0 and later. Acrobat Reader Installer is
included on this CD-ROM. Install Acrobat Reader v. 4.0 on your hard drive
if not already installed. Refer to the associated readme and text files
supplied with the Acrobat Reader software for installation information.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is also available for download free of charge from
the following website (current as of January 2001): Adobe Incorporated
(www.adobe.com). Help files and online manuals located at these websites
describe installation and use of the software. The Acrobat Reader software
is described in more detail in the Online Guide that can be accessed once
you open the Acrobat application. 2.
Launch Acrobat Reader and open the “putumayo.pdf” file located on the CD-ROM. 3.
Hints for using Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Acrobat toolbar is located along
the top of the program’s open window. Most of the icons in the toolbar
are self explanatory. The arrow icons scroll through the document one page
at a time. The bar-arrow icons move to the first or last page in the PDF
file. The double-arrow icon allows the user to back up to previous views. The
PDF files contain several buttons that facilitate navigation within and
between files. The left and right pointing red triangles advance the reader
to the previous and the next page in the PDF file. The “Go Back” button,
the left pointing arrow in the toolbar, can be used to return to the previous
view. This is especially useful for returning from references in the text.
Several clicks on the “Go Back” button may be required since each panning
or magnification change is considered a view by the Adobe Acrobat Reader
software. The magnification glass icon can be accessed in the toolbar at
the top of the screen to zoom in or out. The “Thumbnail” icons accessible
on the left side of the screen can be clicked to jump directly to that
page. The page that is currently displayed will be highlighted. A box on
the “Thumbnail” shows which portion of the page is being displayed. Moving
this box will display a different portion of the page. Changing the size
of the box will also change the amount of enlargement. The “Bookmarks”
accessed on the left side of the screen can be clicked to take the reader
directly to headings, figures, and tables listed. The
file-naming convention on this publication is primarily eight dot three
(ISO 9660 convention). This indicates the file has a maximum of eight characters
to the left or and three to the right of the “.”. An asterisk (*) is used
in this publication as a symbol to match all characters. It commonly indicates
a longer file name, for example fig*.pdf would access all files that start
with “fig” and end with “.pdf”, such as fig101.pdf and fig102.pdf. UNIX
is case-sensitive; almost all file names within directories (folders) are
lower case. Contents of this CD-ROM include: putumayo.pdf (This file is the report) readme.pdf and readme.txt Folders called epsgraph, pdfgraph, and pdftable contain,
respectively, encapsulated postscript (eps) and Portable Document Format
(pdf) graphics files, and pdf files of tables 1-3. The text file, putumayo.pdf,
contains links to the table pdf’s and selected links to illustration pdf’s.
The “Bookmarks” at the left of the pdf page images are also very useful
navigation aids. fig101.pdf fig102.pdf fig103.pdf fig104.pdf fig105.pdf fig106.pdf fig107.pdf fig108.pdf fig109.pdf fig110.pdf fig111.pdf fig112.pdf fig113.pdf fig114.pdf fig115.pdf table1.pdf table2.pdf table3.pdf |
