Using a geology-based assessment methodology, the USGS quantitatively estimated potential volumes of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas resources within coalbed-gas assessment units (AUs). This is the third digital map product in a series of USGS unconventional oil and gas resource maps. The map plate included in this report can be printed in hardcopy form or downloaded in a Geographic Information System (GIS) data package, including an ArcGIS ArcMap document (.mxd), geodatabase (.gdb), and published map file (.pmf). In addition, the publication access table contains hyperlinks to current USGS coalbed-gas assessment publications and web pages. Purpose: The assessment unit (AU) is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment of Oil and Gas Project for the estimation of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The AU is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System (TPS). The AU is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the TPS, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The AU boundary is defined geologically as the limits of reservoir rock, geologic structures, source rock, and seal lithologies. The only exceptions to this are AUs that border international boundaries with Canada and Mexico, or the Federal-State water boundary. In these cases, the international boundary or the Federal-State water boundary forms part of the assessment unit boundary. Supplemental_Information: Coalbed gas assessment units are listed here by assessment unit number and name: Number Name 50010181 Nanushuk Formation Coalbed Gas 50010182 Prince Creek-Tuluvak Formations Coalbed Gas 50010183 Sagavanirktok Formation Coalbed Gas 50030281 Cook Inlet Coalbed Gas 50040381 Eocene-Coalbed Gas 50200181 Northern Coal Fairway/Drunkards Wash 50200182 Central Coal Fairway/Buzzards Bench 50200183 Southern Coal Fairway 50200185 Southern Coal Outcrop 50200281 Uinta Basin Blackhawk Coalbed Gas 50200282 Mesaverde Group Coalbed Gas 50210581 Kaiparowits Plateau Coalbed Gas 50220181 Fruitland Fairway Coalbed Gas 50220182 Basin Fruitland Coalbed Gas 50220381 Menefee Coalbed Gas 50311081 Fort Union Coalbed Gas 50330181 Wasatch Formation 50330182 Upper Fort Union Formation 50330183 Lower Fort Union-Lance Formations 50340281 Mesaverde-Meeteetse Formation Coalbed Gas 50340282 Fort Union Formation Coalbed Gas 50350281 Mesaverde Coalbed Gas 50350282 Meeteetse Coalbed Gas 50350283 Fort Union Coalbed Gas 50360281 Frontier-Adaville-Evanston Coalbed Gas 50370581 Mesaverde Coalbed Gas 50370681 Mesaverde Coalbed Gas 50370682 Fort Union Coalbed Gas 50370881 Lance Coalbed Gas 50370882 Fort Union Coalbed Gas 50370981 Wasatch-Green River Coalbed Gas 50410181 Raton Coalbed Gas 50410182 Vermejo Coalbed Gas 50470281 Cretaceous Olmos Coalbed Gas 50470381 Wilcox Coalbed Gas 50620481 Arkoma Coalbed Gas 50640481 Desmoinesian-Virgilian Coalbed Gas 50650281 Warrior Basin 50670581 Pocahontas Basin 50670582 East Dunkard (Folded) Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Single_Date/Time: Calendar_Date: 2014 Currentness_Reference: publication date Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: As needed Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -165. The first digit of the code indicates the World region number (5), the following three digits (5067) are the North America province number, the next two digits (506705) are the Total Petroleum System number, and the last two digits (50670581) are the assessment unit number. The assessment results attributes include estimated volumes of undiscovered, technically recoverable gas and natural gas liquids. For more detailed assessment results data, refer to the publications for the Provinces that are available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/dds/dds-069/ or the USGS Fact Sheets that are available for each Province at the National Oil and Gas Assessment website - http://energy.usgs.gov/OilGas/AssessmentsData/NationalOilGasAssessment.aspx. Logical_Consistency_Report: The assessment unit boundary was defined on the basis of the surface and subsurface geology of the petroleum system elements, and oil and gas production, shows, and seeps related to the assessment unit. The province geologist was required to defend the geologic boundaries of each assessment unit in a formal geologic and petroleum system review meeting. Completeness_Report: The assessment unit was mapped in part on the data contained in the IHS Energy Group, WHCS data base for wells, and the Nehring Significant Oil and Gas Field File. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The assessment unit boundary represents the gross boundary of the combined geologic elements that comprise the Total Petroleum System. The assessment unit boundary was mapped by the province geologists and the boundary line digitally transferred using ArcGIS.
