Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of the point locations from which
digital photographs were collected by Henry Chezar, USGS,
on November 4, 1998, on the R/V David Johnston,
associated with a marine data collection activity
referred to by the USGS/CMG Activity ID: J-4-98-MB
Purpose:
These data are provided to accompany the publication of
the photographic images on cdrom intended for science
researchers, students from elementary through
college, policy makers, and general public.
Supplemental_Information:
From 1995 to 1999 the United States Geological Survey
conducted a multifaceted scientific study of the seafloor
geology and geologic processes within the Monterey Bay
National Marine Sanctuary. Included in this study and
presented here is a digital photographic survey
documenting the coastal morphology and stratigraphy
between Point Aņo Nuevo and Santa Cruz, California, with
precision-navigated overlapping images. Another part of
the study is producing a digital database of seafloor
geologic maps. A comparison of the newly acquired
seafloor maps and coastline images provides a means of
visualizing the transition from sea to land.
The more than 500 digital coastline images included on
this CD-ROM are linked by interactive location maps. The
HTML and image files are also accessible by standard
browser and image software.
Locations were transcribed from global positioning
system (GPS) data captured with each image.
Where such data were missing or erroneous,
an estimate (flagged in attribute table) was supplied.
Arcinfo point coverage and attribute table
were generated from the data.

The images are linked to a series of location
maps. The hierarchy of links looks like this:
>Regional map (92 kb)
> Detailed map (window x)
> 72 dpi image
> 300 dpi image
The regional map displays the 23 areas into
which the photographic images were divided.
Each number on the regional map is a link to a
detailed map (for example, window 8) that
includes a sequence of about 30 images with an
overlap of 5 images, for example, windows 8
and 9 have 5 images in common. Each of the
points on a detailed map is linked to a 72 dpi
version of the image captured at that
location. Along with each 72 dpi image another
link will display the higher-resolution
300 dpi image.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Point features present.
The sea-level images of the coast were
collected from aboard the research
vessel RV David Johnston in November
1998. We started from Aņo Nuevo and
motored southward to Santa Cruz at
approximately 16 knots (30 km/hr) and
acquired more than 500 overlapping,
high-resolution digital images.
Completeness_Report:
Because of the rapid camera firing rates
needed to acquire overlapping images,
the GPS information would sometimes be
missing, duplicated or erroneous because
of inadequate satellite download time.
In those situations, an interpolated
position is inserted in the sequence log
(photolog.txt).
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Each photograph encompasses
approximately 200 m of coastline--
varying with distance from shore--and
overlaps between adjacent photographs
are tens of meters. The photographs
were taken with a 35-mm high-resolution
digital camera connected to a portable
global positioning system (GPS) receiver
with a horizontal accuracy of less than
3 meters. For most of the images,
GPS data (date, time of
day, latitude, longitude, and altitude)
are recorded in the upper left corner of
each image. The GPS data are of the ship
positions only and are best read on the
higher-resolution (300 dpi) images.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
As all images were taken at sea level,
the altitude data on each image should
be ignored.

The images were captured in Kodak
compressed TIFF format. Each image,
when uncompressed with Kodak
software, has a file size of 4.5 Mb
(megabytes). To fit all the images
on one CD-ROM, each TIFF file was
desampled and converted to a
high-quality JPEG (xxx.jpg) image
that is just under 1 Mb in size
(300 dots per inch at 3 x 5 inch).
A second set of images was desampled
to about 30 to 50 kb (72 dots per
inch at 4 x 5 inch) for more rapid
viewing.
