We have included in this folder a free copy of ArcExplorer 2.0, which you can install on your Windows PC (see below for installation instructions). Note that only PCs running Windows 98/2000/NT/XP may run the ArcExplorer 2.0 version of HAZPAC. If you do have ArcView 3.x software, you will gain more functionality from HAZPAC if you use one of the two ArcView versions of HAZPAC, both of which you will find on this CD-ROM in the "HAZPAC_ARCVIEW" folder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTENTS OF THE "HAZPAC_ARCEX" FOLDER ON THIS CD-ROM: 1_README_ARCEXPLORER.TXT - this README file HAZPAC.AEP - the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project USERGUIDEAX.PDF - the HAZPAC User Guide (ArcExplorer version) DATA - directory of data and related files for the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project: METADATA_AX.TXT - metadata for the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project data IMAGE - subdirectory of images (and related files) of ArcView grids: COLORMAP.JPG - explanation of colors in HAZPAC's images LIGHTS_AT_NIGHT (.JGW, .JPG) POPULATION_DENSITY (.JGW, .JPG) SEISMIC_HAZARD (.JGW, .JPG) SHADED_RELIEF (.JGW, .JPG) TOPOGRAPHY_&_BATHYMETRY (.JGW, .JPG) SHAPE - subdirectory of ArcExplorer shapefiles (and related files): AIR_ROUTES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) AIRPORTS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) CABLES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) CITIES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) COUNTRIES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) EARTHQUAKES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) ENERGY_RESOURCES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) RAILROADS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) RIVERS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) TROPICAL_STORMS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) TSUNAMIS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) UTILITIES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) VOLCANIC_ERUPTIONS (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) VOLCANOES (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) WATER (.DBF, .SHP, .SHX) SOFTWARE - folder containing installable software needed for the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project: ARCEX2SETUP.EXE - installs ArcExplorer 2.0 ADOBE_ACROBAT - folder containing installable Adobe Acrobat Reader software: MACINTOSH - folder containing Macintosh Adobe Acrobat Reader software: 1_README_MACADOBE.TXT - README file for the Macintosh Acrobat Reader installer MAC_ACROBATINSTALLER - installs Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 on a Macintosh WINDOWSPC - folder containing Windows PC Adobe Acrobat Reader software: 1_README_PCADOBE.TXT - README file for the Windows PC Acrobat Reader installer PC_ACROBATINSTALLER.EXE - installs Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 on a Windows PC ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GETTING STARTED WITH THE ARCEXPLORER VERSION OF HAZPAC: For best results, copy the "HAZPAC_ARCEX" folder from this CD-ROM onto your hard drive. To run the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project, you will need to have ArcExplorer 2.0 installed on your Windows PC. If it is not already installed, you may install it directly from this CD-ROM. To install, first log on as "Administrator," then click on "ARCEX2SETUP.EXE" in the "HAZPAC_ARCEX\SOFTWARE" folder. If you should experience any installation problems, please contact ESRI directly at http://www.esri.com. If you have never used ArcExplorer software before, we highly recommend that you follow the Tutorial in the HAZPAC User Guide (ArcExplorer version). This User Guide, which is called "USERGUIDEAX.PDF" and is located in the "HAZPAC_ARCEX" folder, contains exercises and a User Reference Guide that will help familiarize you with ArcExplorer software and with the various functions in the HAZPAC ArcExplorer project. The User Guide is a PDF (Portable Document Format) file that must be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you may install Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 directly from this CD-ROM. To install Acrobat Reader on a Windows PC, first log on as "Administrator," then click on "PC_ACROBATINSTALLER.EXE" in the "SOFTWARE\ADOBE_ACROBAT\WINDOWSPC" folder (if you are upgrading from an earlier version of Acrobat Reader, please follow the specific instructions in the file "1_README_PCADOBE.TXT"). To install Acrobat Reader on a Macintosh computer, click on "MAC_ACROBATINSTALLER" in the "SOFTWARE\ADOBE_ACROBAT\MACINTOSH" folder (please follow the instructions in the file "1_README_MACADOBE.TXT"). If you experience installation problems, please contact Adobe directly at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DATA IN THE ARCEXPLORER VERSION OF HAZPAC: All data in the ArcExplorer version of HAZPAC ("HAZPAC.AEP") have been projected into the Mollweide projection, around a central meridian of 160.00 degrees West (-160.00 degrees) longitude. The Crowding the Rim GIS Development Team has made every effort to maintain the integrity of the original datasets whenever possible. Obvious errors in the data have been corrected, but, in most cases, the data is presented "as is." In some cases, however, data had to be manipulated in order to make them suitable for HAZPAC. As a consequence, manual editing may have resulted in minor errors during this process. For details concerning the sources of, as well as any modifications to, the datasets in the ArcExplorer version of HAZPAC, please consult the metadata file, "METADATA_AX.TXT" (located in the "HAZPAC_ARCEX\DATA" folder).
